Missing post: Second Calderdale MP takes on 'Royal Mail shambles' as residents go weeks without any post

Both Calderdale’s MPs have now pledged to tackle the long waits residents are enduring to receive their post.
Josh Fenton-Glynn, MP for the Calder Valley, has joined Halifax MP Kate Dearden in promising to find out why people are seeing such long delivery delays.

The Courier reported last week how Ms Dearden – whose recent ministerial appointment includes a responsibility for postal services – said she “will not shy away from holding Royal Mail to account for its failures”.

Days – and sometimes weeks - of late post has been leading to missed hospital appointments and the chance to appeal parking fines for some.

Ms Dearden said she has raised the issue with Royal Mail and demanded action.

Mr Fenton-Glynn is also tackling the problem, saying residents across his constituency are experiencing “unacceptable delays” in receiving letters.

After multiple attempts to raise this at a lower level, he has written to Royal Mail boss Alistair Cochrane.

“While occasional disruptions are understandable, the volume and consistency of these reports suggests more serious and ongoing issues and systemic failings,” says his letter.

"Royal Mail provides an essential public service, and my constituents have a right to expect that important correspondence will be delivered promptly and reliably.

“At present, many do not have that confidence.

"My constituents are understandably frustrated that these issues have persisted for so long, especially where delayed deliveries have had real consequences for their health, finances and daily lives.

"I share their concerns and expect Royal Mail to treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves.”
