A much-loved Clydebank postie is signing off after 48 years of delivering mail and serving the community.

Bryan Irvine spent a large portion of his career working out of the Clydebank sorting office.

In the first few decades, he served rural areas of the town often delivering to small holdings and farms, where he said he found a sense of calm.

The 66-year-old said: "When you go up there, you get away from everyone and escape.

"I met a lot of really nice people in my time.

"I've seen kids who are the same age as my kids growing up over the years.

"From babies all the way up until they're 34 years old.

"And I'd always keep a box of dog treats with me."

Bryan found himself in some unusual situations over the years from lending a hand herding animals to helping people in need.

In the latter half of his time, he covered some of the residential areas in Hardgate.

His daughter, Steph Nivison, described him as having a "cheery nature and willingness to go the extra mile", which meant that over the years he became a "familiar and trusted face within the Hardgate community" who was "far more than just the man who delivers the post."

She said he will leave behind a "community full of people who will genuinely miss seeing him on their doorstep."

He started on the job fresh out of school, at 18-years-old, when posties would be up at the crack of dawn and out delivering at quarter to five in the morning, which he says has now largely changed to a nine-to-five job.

As Bryan steps away from his job and into retirement after a long career embedded in the community, he's planning to join a bowling club and fill his days with long walks accompanied by his dog.

I think that's got a bit mangled in reporting. Surely your shift started at quarter to five? Deliveries didn't commence until around 7AM.
The machine stops.
