From the age of 15, Paul Eccleston has made sure people across the West Midlands have received their mail on time.

But now, almost 45 years later, the father-of-two has hung up his uniform ready to put his feet up and retire.

Paul, who will be celebrating his 60th birthday on Tuesday, joined Royal Mail’s base in Berry Street, Wolverhampton, to work as a telegram boy after leaving school.

Four years later, in 1968, he picked up his satchel to start delivering post throughout the city.

And it was just two years later that he found his true calling in the company when he moved to its sorting office, which was then based in Corn Hill, Horseley Fields.

Despite a brief two-year stint as a uniforms officer at the company’s Stafford office he had found his job for life.

After a farewell party at the Royal Mail sorting office in Sun Street, Paul, from Essington, is now planning to spend more time with his family, including wife Angela, aged 58, who works as a school cleaner. He also has daughter Rachel, aged 37, son John, 33, and grandchildren James, 18, and 13-year-old Amy to occupy his time.
