‘Exhausted’ factory worker attacked postman who tried to deliver parcel

A 28-year-old man has been handed a suspended prison sentence after attacking a postman in Tiverton.

Mason Luffman, of Newport Street, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm from December 3, 2024.

The court heard the postman was on his rounds and attempted to deliver a parcel to Luffman’s address. He knocked on the door but there was no response, and as he began walking away, the defendant opened the door.

A verbal altercation followed, before Luffman pushed the postman to the floor and repeatedly punched him to the head. He then left the victim on the floor as he walked back inside.

Luffman later turned himself in to Tiverton police station.

His solicitor said he had just come off three back-to-back night shifts working at a local factory, and the knocking had woken him up.

“He lost control of himself and attacked the postman,” the defence said. “This is somebody who ordinarily wouldn’t dream of doing something like that.”

Luffman, who is now a forklift driver, said he never wants to work night shifts again and was “horrified” by his actions.

The defence said the attack was down to “pent up anger, exhaustion and not being in a good place with his mental health”.

The postman sustained significant bruising and swelling to his face, causing one of his eyes to close completely. District Judge Smith described the images of the injuries as “horrific”.
