A THIEVING postman stole parcels and dumped hundreds of letters in his garden - because he "couldn't be bothered" to deliver them.
James Latter, from East Grinstead, could face jail after admitting three charges of theft and four offences of intentionally delaying mail.
Latter, of Moat Road, nicked a DVD, a bag and a watch instead of delivering them to their intended recipients, a court heard.
He also hoarded several hundred items of mail in his back garden, rather than delivering them to the intended addresses.
Guildford Crown Court was told last Wednesday (October 1) that the offences were committed between May 8, 2005, and February 12 this year.
Frank Letwidge, from the Royal Mail, said the defendant had been employed as a postman based at Caterham Post Office, in Surrey.
Mr Letwidge said several hundred letters had also been found in a bag in the garden of Latter's former home.
He said: "The defendant left them there because he could not be bothered to deliver them."
The court was told the offences came to light following an investigation by the Royal Mail.
Keith Goodhand, defending, asked for sentencing to be postponed so that probation reports could be prepared on his client.
Latter was remanded on bail until October 31 and warned by Judge Christopher Critchlow that all sentencing options, including prison, would be considered.
The judge told the court: "This is a very serious matter."

As the judge has intimated a very serious crime indeed, an absolute disgrace which no doubt will cast on the honesty and integrity of his hard working and law abiding work colleagues plus through his actions bringing the company's name into disrepute. Another bad egg who needs IMHO shown the door swiftly.
"Today’s workplace has become heartless and soulless. Employees are seen as units of labour, automatons, functionaries, objects for achieving designated tasks, and as costs to be minimised."

Shown the door to a prison cell IMO, then pushed inside for many years.
