ROYAL MAIL’s much-maligned new delivery system, Pegasus, could be reviewed in the face of continued criticism from residents, businesses and postal staff.

The new delivery system, designed to cut costs by reducing the number of walks made by postmen through the town, began in Watford on September 1 but has so far left workers struggling under the weight of backlogged mail.

Talks have taken place between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers’ Union at the town’s sorting office, in Ascot Road, to resolve the problems, with the possibility of creating new routes from those under the most strain.

Glenda Marcus, who runs a small business, said she received a first class letter on Wednesday that was posted on September 17, and after receiving no post on Tuesday, had two deliveries within half-an-hour the next day.

Ms Marcus, from Meadowbank, Oxhey, said: “That’s not a delivery service. And they say they haven’t got a problem.

“I don’t ask a lot. I just ask for my mail be delivered daily.”

One postman who works at the Ascot Road depot said the situation “had not changed”, during the four weeks since Pegasus was installed.

He said: “Postmen are going out delivering mail and still getting slaughtered by members of the general public about why their mail is not arriving.

“The only way to resolve the situation is by going back to where we were four weeks ago.

When you get walks going over three-and-a-half hours, you have to take some roads off the walks and make new walks.”

Alan Walsh, branch secretary of the Communication Workers’ Union, admitted Pegasus was “poorly conceived” and though the backlog is better than it was, said “it’s a long way from being right”.

However, Mr Walsh moved to reassure residents that postal staff were not taking industrial action, and said talks were held yesterday (Thursday) and on Wednesday to discuss creating some new routes from those under the most strain.

He added: “They’ve accepted the need to do something with the deliveries.

“Whether it will run until Christmas I couldn’t say. There are still quite a few problems to iron out. Hopefully it will be fixed within the next couple of weeks.”

A Royal Mail representative said: “There are no backlogs of first or second class mail in Watford and only a tiny amount of backlog of other mail, less than a 50th of an average day’s volumes.

“No new walks have been introduced although we continue to use extra resource where necessary and review the situation.

“The changes, which have been brought in without problem in hundreds of delivery offices across the UK, were brought in following consultation with staff and the union before implementation and all addresses in Watford continue to receive a delivery every day, six days a week.

“We can assure customers that we continue to do all we can to ensure they continue to receive the service they are entitled to.”

What a load of bo*****s, if staff are saying there is a backlog then I,am inclined to agrre with them.
In our office up here in Fife, some dely, are showing up to 1 1/2 hrs of a difference under Pegasus so imagine if this was implemented and you find yourself on a dely. that runs at over 4 1/2 hrs a day what exactly are customers going to think if you don,t turn up at usual time or turn up at all !!!!
My dely was tested after Pegasus said I had 90 mins to spare!! Got tested by me manager and as if by magic my dely. took 3hrs 15 mins, I ask everyone here to dispute all the figures otherwise we all end up fighting line managers every day when we cannot complete, but the customers are the one,s losing out and who knows if bigger business may go elsewhere because of this? :lfo

Didn't pegasus originate in Canada, were it was a disaster. It's due to be introduced into my DO in the next couple of weeks but we have still not been given any answers to our questions (just the usual 'I'm not telling you' from our manager  ).

do a google image search for household mailboxes in Canada - first thing is that it's like the states where they have mailboxes well outside , no drives ,bl**dy dogs , no gardens etc :hmmmm :hmmmm
I remember a certain defunct forum post about one RM idea was based on collecting bin liners left on the kerb for those private refuse collection companies in Belgium ? :hmmmm :hmmmm

But the union still let them go ahead a bring it in :arrrghhh
It may have been implemented by Executive Action it was at my place. Nationally the union do not have an agreement on it so we are in limbo over it nationally as well.

It`s a stupid fooked up system that wants flushing down the nearest bog with a big bangin Richard the Third.

In our small section Georoute has made two walks go over by 45 mins, two walks are easier than they were before clocking in at only 2.5 hrs,on mine I have a dead walk of 15minutes past houses that a rural driver does but it really should be on mine, I wave to the customers who wonder why I pass at 12o`clock but the rural driver doesn`t get there till 1.45.
We`ve been told off the DOM that the walks are `fine` even though they are clearly not,two posties have gone off with stress because their walks are so shite whilst the two on 2.5 hrs are busy taking the piss out of the rest of us,talk about DIVIDE AND CONQUER.
It`s a wonderful system typical RM fook up.
Royal Mail managers.....about as popular as a t.urd in a swimming pool!
The DDA/Equality Act demands action,NOT words......adjustments NOT Occupational Health referrals.Case No:2505901/09
Royal Mail is an Equal Opportunities Employer..It discriminates against everybody.
