Royal Mail reduces per-parcel emissions by 20% in 2024-2025

Royal Mail has cut its average carbon emissions per parcel delivered by 20% over the past year, according to its latest environmental, social and governance (ESG) report.

The report, published on June 26, shows carbon emissions per parcel fell to 165gCO2e from 206gCO2e in the prior year. This is considerably lower than other major UK parcel operators, who reported emissions of between 308g and 547gCO2e per parcel, according to Citizens Advice’s 2024 parcels league table.

According to Royal Mail, the reduction was driven by the company’s increased use of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) – a low-emission biofuel – in its fleet of large trucks; the deployment of 1,900 new electric vans; energy efficiency measures across its estate; and a strong reduction in its Scope 3 emissions, including almost halving the number of domestic flights.

Alistair Cochrane, interim CEO at Royal Mail, commented, “We’re immensely proud of our sustainability progress, which has once again exceeded our expectations. We are the UK’s greenest delivery company for parcels and letters and are reaping the rewards of our work to make our fleet and estate more environmentally friendly, on top of the benefits of our unique ‘feet on the street’ delivery model. Whilst there’s still lots more work to be done, this huge achievement reflects our commitment to being net zero by 2040.”

Royal Mail’s total emissions were 1,173KtCO2e in 2024-25, representing an overall reduction of 25% on its base year in 2020-21. Scope 1-2 emissions decreased by 27% against the base year, while Scope 3 emissions fell by 24% compared with the base year. The company has pledged to reach net zero by 2040 as part of its Steps to Zero environment strategy and has set interim targets to 2030.

Roughly translated, that means 1 in 5 deliveries don't go out on a daily basis. Yet Royal Mail put a spin on it and are saving the planet.

The way of the modern world now unfortunately. It's all red tape and lies from the top down. Back slapping and bonuses for the top brass, hardship and micromanagement for the plebs.

Have we yet nullified the emissions increase from P&L puting an extra 17,000 vans on the street between 2008 and 2018?

COLOD apparently had/was to have an impact...

...though I wonder if that has been negated by the collections job being introduced last year and all those hire vans on the road in the afternoon and evenings.
Any Questions?
Yeah, how do I get out of this chickenshit outfit?

What about the extra emissions from the even older van fleet ????

and how does this fit with their desire to turn HCT duties in to van shares under ODM ?????

Shipping parcels by Royal Mail 325 EMU trains offers significant environmental benefits compared to traditional road transport. Trains are far more energy-efficient, producing fewer greenhouse gas emissions and less pollution per ton-mile of freight. This efficiency translates to a smaller carbon footprint and contributes to reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality.

The business built a RM Super Parcel hub in the Midlands and Rail Hub , sadly it’s been a waste of money it’s been made redundant and only used for 3 months . The Royal Mail EMU 325 are now in a scrap yard waiting to be crushed .

RM have 4 x Rail Hubs PRDC , South Mids , Warrington and SDC Scotland I can see the Rail Hubs being sold off to another logistic carrier.
What’s the point in keeping them when we don’t have trains .

The class 325s AFAIK were life expired. I believe that it's partly down to what Network Rail charge to access the national rail network.

I still find it funny the talk of environmental issues when instead of 1 or 2 couriers I’m now sometimes with 4+ down the same road. It’s not unusual for me, evri, Amazon dpd and dhl to be in the same road at the same time 🤣🤣

Haha we beat that, for the last about 6 years, one of our lapsed duties is a big estate there's only one road in/out and you guessed it six vans going every day.
