Mail from 2006 found dumped at back of flats

MORE than 70 items of mail dating back to 2006 have been found dumped behind a block of flats in Glasgow.

The letters were contained in 15 postal pouches and are in very poor condition.

Royal Mail bosses said they would deliver what letters they could with an apology - but it's understood some have been too badly damaged.


The pouches were spotted last week behind the Iona Court flats in Ibrox.

A resident reported the find to a postman but when the local sorting office manager went to the area he could not find them.

This week the same man went into the Summertown Road sorting office with one of the pouches and details of the exact location.

Bosses said they launched an inquiry into the discovery as "a matter of urgency".

Due to the dates on the letters and the place where they were dumped, bosses believe the mail is related to a case two years ago, which led to a postman being sacked.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: "A small amount of mail has been recovered which dates back two years and is related to a case where a postman was sacked for failing to deliver mail.

"The items that can be salvaged will be delivered with an apology letter to customers.

"Royal Mail would like to thank the customer for bringing this matter to our attention.

"The company takes the security of the mail extremely seriously."

A local woman said she was in the Summertown Road office when the customer came in with the pouch.

She added: "He was quite annoyed. He told the staff he'd already reported there were 15 bags of mail scattered around behind Iona Court.

"It had been almost a week since he found it."

In May 2005, part-time postie Eamonn Mellon was sacked after dumping hundreds of items of mail in the Royston area of Glasgow. He claimed he was frightened of a dog on his round.

In 2006, letters were dumped outside a busy office block in Hope Street.

Last year, a Scotstoun man claimed he had to wait 11 days for Royal Mail staff to come and pick up letters dumped in his garden.

I heard of a customer who spent three days trying to phone our office to complain about a postman dumping letters.She then came into the office to report the matter. A further four days passed before a manager went to the site to retrieve the dumped mail. Me personally,I would have said 'ye had yer chance' after the three days bit and phoned the gutter press to let them report it to RM.
