SPEECH TO CONFERENCE SESSION PROSPERITY AND WORK–ROYAL MAIL

Prosperity and work sets out the most positive future for Royal Mail of any party in Britain.

Given the chance, both the Conservative’s and the Liberal Democrats would privatise Royal Mail, and break up the group.

They would place this invaluable national network in the hands of asset strippers and short sellers.

It is the Labour Party that recognises that Royal Mail must remain a public service.

Delivering to 28.4 million addresses, at a uniform tariff, Royal Mail provides a unique channel for commercial and social interests.

It draws individuals, communities and businesses together.

Of course, there are problems to address.

Decades of under investment have still not been fully addressed.

Royal Mail still needs a management team supportive of its public service ethos, rather than campaigning for large share options to go along with over inflated bonuses.

The regulation of Royal Mail has badly suffered from an excess of free market dogma.

And there remains an historic deficit in the pensions fund which the government has to address.

But the CWU is working with the government to ensure that effective solutions to these problems are achieved.

Immediately, government will have to ensure that Royal Mail ends the subsidy it is providing to competitors in access products.

Further, the price control imposed by the regulator must be re-opened. Royal Mail cannot survive if its products are exchanged at less than their value.

But the universal service can, and must be defended in the public sector.

We will not turn over an essential national asset to people who have brought the financial sector to its knees.

Innovative services with domestic customers and businesses alike can be provided if Royal Mail is encouraged to invest in the change.

The CWU is helping to develop policies to adapt Royal Mail and postal workers to the revolution in communications.

Postal workers know how valuable postal services are to house holds and businesses.

If you carry the decisions of the NPF, then together we will deliver a positive future for Royal Mail as a comprehensive, integrated public service.
