Post Office request is 'an insult'

UPPER Welland’s village store has refused to become an outreach centre for the Post Office after being offered less than £14 a week.

Under proposals released last week the shop would have become a temporary base for post office services provided three hours a week on Thursday afternoons.

Owner Dawn Scarrott said: “They were a bit flummoxed when I told them. They said ‘Is it about the money?’, and I said yes, because it’s just an insult.”

“After tax, all they are offering us is about £10 a week.”

For this sum, Dawn and her partner Alan Rawlings would have had to provide storage space throughout the week as well as space for the post office counter itself.

The money would also have had to cover the electricity used by the post office staff member.

Dawn said: “At first we were going to let them, but because it’s an outreach they can do it from anywhere, so they can go to a village hall, or a pub or someone’s house.”

Dawn and Alan previously paid themselves wages out of the rent from the post office and ploughed any other takings back into the shop.

Chairman of Malvern Wells Parish Council, Malcolm Victory, said: “It’s very regrettable that the post office has not offered a sufficient incentive for them to provide the space for an out reach centre.”

Cllr Victory believes the only available public space that could be used for post office services would be Upper Welland Methodist Church.

Spokesman for the post office Jane Thomas, said: “We are now looking for an alternative location which is within the local area and accessible for people.”
