Narberth postman Dorian Rees - pictured cycling 850 miles for Ward 10 in Withybush Hospital - has now clocked up 40 years’ service, having joined Royal Mail in 1984.

Since he joined Royal Mail in February 1984, Dorian has spent all his time working in and from Narberth delivery office. Over 30 years of that time he has spent delivering to the Amroth, Summerhill, Stepaside and Pleasant Valley area.

“I have made some wonderful friendships over the years,” he says, “becoming a big part of this very supportive community.” This, he adds, has included “the privilege of delivering a card from the Queen to Amroth legend Eileen Algate on her 100th birthday.”

Dorian remembers his colleagues: “When I started in 1984, there were some great characters in the Narberth office such as Geraint Bowen, Clyde Evans, Nigel Rossiter and Eric Dunn.

“The job has changed a huge amount over the years,” he adds. “It was very community based and I remember delivering newspapers to rural areas, sometimes the postman is the only outside contact that some people see all day.

“There was a good social atmosphere in Narberth with many a visit to see Auntie Kay in the Farmers Arms, conveniently located next door to the sorting office in Spring Gardens!”

Dorian Rees is also a keen cyclist, which he has put to good use raising money for local causes. The picture of him on the bike was taken by local photographer Malcolm Richards when Dorian was undertaking a solo 850 mile cycle ride. It was 20 years ago that he rode from Northern Spain to Brittany in France to raise money for Ward 10 in Withybush Hospital. He also helped to organise the Pembrokeshire Charity Bike Ride which has raised money for many local charities.

The presentation for Dorian’s 40 years of service as a postman was made by manager Dan Mumford. It took place in front of all Dorian’s colleagues, many of whom he has worked with for decades, becoming great friends over the years.
