Police investigate £9,000 theft from Royal Mail trolley

AN investigation has been launched after almost £9,000-worth of foreign currency destined for a Burnley travel agents was stolen from an unattended mail trolley.
The incident happened last week, in Hammerton Street at 9-30 a.m., when a thief stole post from a Royal Mail trolley.

It was later confirmed post being delivered to Brunlea Travel, which included almost £9,000 in Euros and US Dollars, was stolen from the unmanned trolley.

Mr Alan Armstrong, manager at the Hammerton Street firm, said: "We were only made aware of the incident when a representative from the sorting office in Burnley came round to inform us. I think this is a poor way of delivering mail. It should not be left unmanned at any stage. It is completely irresponsible especially when so much money is involved.

"The company has spoken to the sorting office and we have been made aware a new procedure will be put in place. This will hopefully make the delivery of mail more secure. The firm is currently undergoing an insurance claim to compensate for the missing cash."

The money was being sent from an exchange company in Peterborough called International Currency Exchange. Police have been made aware of the theft and have begun inquiries.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: "I can confirm that approximately 9-30 a.m. last Wednesday a small number of items of mail were stolen while a postman was delivering to Hammerton Street, Burnley. This has been referred to the police and we are co-operating fully with the investigation."

Now I may be wrong but I thought any valuable prios or those going to businesses that are likely to deal in cash of valuables should be sent out in a van, in the locker provided in each van for it. Or have I got that wrong.

RM always know best and only they have the answers be fair it did save the cost of a van ! - in a few years RM will try to manage joined up thinking

Whats he doing delivering at 9:30am???? We can't leave until 10am and I personally don't leave til about 10:30-11:30 depending

There are no lockers in our vans, and if it didn't say currency or high value, how are we to know what the item contains. Plus I don't really care what an item contains, I just try and deliver it the right address.

Royalmail would say "At least our trolley was not stolen and more cost to the (buisness) is unsustainable it is a regrettable incident and a full investigation is under way and we do not tolerate theft from the (buisness)!. ends royalmail." :cfo
