Couple discovered importing drugs

A COUPLE were caught importing class C drugs when a neighbour’s son ripped open one of their illicit parcels, a court heard.

Gareth Jones and Patricia Chubb made thousands of pounds from importing diazepam tablets in bulk from Sri Lanka to their home in the Rhondda and selling them on.

Newport Crown Court heard the pair’s downfall came in May last year when a parcel containing thousands of the tablets was delivered to a neighbour’s house by the Royal Mail as they were away.

Roger Griffiths, prosecuting, said while the neighbour was looking after the parcel for Chubb and Jones, her child ripped it open and exposed the illicit contents.

The police were called and the couple’s home was subsequently searched, along with a caravan in Porthcawl.

Along with a number of parcels recovered from the local sorting office, police found more than 640,000 of the tablets which are prescribed to treat anxiety disorders but are addictive and lethal if taken in large quantities.

By the time they were apprehended, more than 100,000 tablets had been sold.

Chubb, 44, of Court Place, Tonypandy, and Jones, 47, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to two counts of importing a class C drug and two counts of possession of a class C drug.

Mr Griffiths said 100 diazepam tablets had a potential value of £25.

“The defendants were enjoying a considerable lifestyle and had a number of holidays abroad to Sri Lanka for the sourcing of these drugs,â€
