April 30 (Bloomberg) -- Deutsche Post AG, Europe's biggest postal service, will raise wages for 130,000 employees to avert a strike that would have brought German mail delivery to a halt.

Deutsche Post and the Ver.di labor union agreed to a 4 percent pay increase effective Nov. 1 and another 3 percent raise starting in December 2009, the Bonn-based mail carrier said in a statement today. Employees will also receive a one-time payment of 200 euros ($310).

Ver.di won 93 percent backing from its members at Deutsche Post in a vote on holding a nationwide walkout starting May 2, the union said earlier today. Workers staged so-called warning strikes, of a few hours each, in parts of Germany over the past few weeks to push the union's demands. Deutsche Post gave up a goal of increasing working hours for employees with civil-servant status, while winning a demand to reduce paid breaks.

``Despite tough conditions, we have reached a compromise that both sides can live with,'' Deutsche Post Personnel Chief Walter Scheurle said in the statement. ``The long-term agreement reached without further strikes is good news for our employees, customers and shareholders.''

Deutsche Post rose as much as 26 cents, or 1.3 percent, to 20.22 euros and was up 0.8 percent as of 4:30 p.m. in Frankfurt. The stock has declined 15 percent this year.

The postal service said it agreed to rule out mass firings for the duration of the contract, which will run until June 30, 2011. Ver.di dropped a demand for 10 additional vacation days as part of the agreement, the German company added. The union had sought a 7 percent pay increase.

About 55,000 of Deutsche Post's employees have the status of civil servants, dating from when the company was state-owned. The postal operator had planned to raise the civil servants' work weeks to 41 hours, in line with government employees in Germany, from 38.5 hours.

Deutsche Post has a web site with some interesting interactive features.

This "cultural explorer" test is interesting... it tells you a lot about the way Deutsche Post operates, and thekind of people it wants to attract as management. RM should be competing with this sort of thing.
