Royal Mail gets first UK electric trucks from Tevva after regulatory green light

British electric vehicle (EV) start-up Tevva aims to sell some 1,000 electric trucks this year after receiving UK and European regulatory approval, it said in a press release.

Delivery of its 7.5-tonne battery-electric trucks to customers has already begun, it added, including to International Distributions Services-owned Royal Mail and Travis Perkins (LSE:TPK).

This standard EV truck will be followed later in 2023 by a 7.5t hydrogen-electric truck, which benefits from hydrogen fuel cells that extend the vehicles' range to up to 354 miles (570km)

Tevva, which publicly unveiled its maiden vehicles in June 2022, has raised US$140mln so far, including £42mln ($57mln) last November.

“We are on a mission to make sustainable trucks accessible at scale and believe our technology will empower the transport sector and the governments of Europe to meet their net-zero goals,” said Tevva chief executive Asher Bennett.

Approval in the UK and EU means it “can start producing and selling in volume,” and represents a “major milestone” in its journey since it was set up in 2013.

“We continue to ‘charge on’ as a company and reach new milestones, with type approval being the latest and most important landmark we’ve achieved to date,” said Bennett.

Its battery electric truck offers a 140 mile range from its 105kWh battery and is “ideal for urban delivery fleets,” the company said.
