Late mail fear over office move

Businesses in a seaside Gwynedd town have voiced concern that the town's mail sorting office is to close.

They claim Barmouth has lost enough services already and moving the sorting office 10 miles (16km) to Dolgellau will result in later delivery times.

But Royal Mail said the move was necessary because the building at Barmouth was unsuitable.

The Communications Workers' Union (CWU) said a number of issues affecting the 13 postmen needed to be sorted out.

"I think this is another service lost in the town which has a population of roughly 2,500 people," said William Huntley, who runs a fish and chip shop in Barmouth.

Businesses were concerned the changes would also mean later postal deliveries, he said.

"Once I've opened the shop I'm too busy to check my post," he said.

John Green of the CWU said the sorting office at Barmouth needed money spent on it because of health and safety issues.

"Our members would rather stay based in the town, but we do acknowledge that they are not the ideal working conditions," he said.

The best option would be a purpose-built office in Barmouth to keep the work and delivery local to the town, he added.

"There are issues with travelling to work at Dolgellau, collections and other day-to-day issues that have to be sorted out before any move.

"Everybody has to be happy, customers too," he added.

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said: "There will inevitably be a period of adjustment while these new operational arrangements come into effect following the move from Barmouth to Dolgellau."

Royal Mail is asking customers for their co-operation as there will be some changes to existing delivery rounds and some alterations to the time of the usual morning delivery.

"We are however determined to cause minimal disruption to our quality of service to customers," she added.
