Unite suspends three day strike at Royal Mail as talks continue

Unite, the UK’s leading union, has announced that 72 hours of strike action by Royal Mail managers set from Wednesday 20 July is now off.

The move follows the conclusion of a ballot of the union’s 2,400 Royal Mail members on new proposals by the employer on jobs, pay and conditions.

Unite’s members have voted by almost two to one (63 per cent to 37 per cent) to accept, meaning talks resume.

This vote does not end the dispute, however, and Unite will now seek further negotiations with the Royal Mail on issues that are yet to be resolved.

Unite national officer with responsibility for the Royal Mail managers, Mike Eatwell, said: “Unite’s members today have accepted the senior management’s return to the negotiating table to improve upon the jobs already put back into the crucial delivery and collections services. Royal Mail’s changed approach is noticeable but there is further to go.

“It was always concerning that the junior and middle managers of the company felt so disrespected they were willing to take industrial action. But the resolve shown by our members in the face of considerable pressure has been admirable. With a share price halved in value and quality of service under severe pressure it is to be hoped lessons have been learnt by all.

“However, there is more talking to do and further movement that must be made by Royal Mail for this dispute to be resolved.”

Used to be quite a few decent managers in RM at one time. But it seems the top bods don't like managers that treat their staff with respect or like human beings so most have been removed or pushed into EVR. Got more chance of finding Bigfoot than finding a decent manager now sadly.

Asked our managers what has royal mail offered them to call the strike off they their reply was that they was unsure what the strike was about apart receiving a load of information from unite which was a waste of time all royal mail has promised them is to treat them with more respect and give the managers that are struggling some support and recruit more managers where needed i kid you not after making 700 redundant.

Apparently they opened up some classified documents and basically said "if you go down this route we'll go down this one" kind of thing.

Apparently again the Unite negotiators turned pale and fled the room.

Whatever it was must have been compelling because I've never seen such a rapid and complete about face following what was a relatively strong mandate for action.

Yeah could be scary stuff ahead, I still like this job at times despite rm's efforts to destroy it, well certain aspects anyway, prob same pro's and cons as everyone else, would be a shame for what's left of it to get the final nail in it's coffin.

Can RM really afford to loose all public support?
