Rise in post office closures hit SMEs in the pocket as they are forced down other routes



UK SMEs are crying out for an alternative to the postal service as concerns mount over the increased number of local post office closures forcing firms to use expensive courier companies.

A survey by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) revealed that 82 per cent of SMEs believe the closure of their local post office would have a significant impact on their business.

Simon Briault, an FSB representative, said: “Small businesses have limited options for an alternative postal service. The private services that are available have cherry picked the government and larger businesses because they do not make enough money from SMEs.â€

Whatever an SME is their alternative route could be a dead end. The necessity for an alternative is because the Post Offices are closing down so SMEs cannot take their packets there. The alternative is to take them to a courier depot. Where are these places? Collections? Aren't these available already? Yet the FSB say many couriers are unreliable. What is clear is that another section of the community is going to suffer due to Royal Mail's slash and burn policy to save money rather than it attempting to grow business in a sensible and imaginative way.
