"Court challenge on post offices
Legal action is being launched aimed at halting plans to shut scores of post offices in London.
The Greater London Authority (GLA) is seeking a judicial review to stop the closure of 171 branches as part of a Post Office restructuring.
The GLA said the company failed to "allow adequate time for a full consultation on the closures".
But a spokesman for the Post Office said: "We are implementing government policy as sensitively as possible".
Since 2001, the number of post offices in London has been cut by 45%, despite a rise in the number of people working and living in the city.
'Disproportionate effect'
During the same period, the national average for post office closures was 34%.
A GLA spokesman said it was committed to "fight this programme of post office closures".
"Post offices closures have had a disproportionate effect on London.
"The action that is being taken today at the High Court is to protect local people and local communities and reflects our commitment to act promptly on behalf of Londoners."
A Post Office spokesman responded saying: "The consultation period was set by the government when they announced the programme.
"We are implementing government policy as sensitively as possible".
The company added that London has more than a quarter of the UK's Crown Post Offices [larger branches] and the highest density of branches per square mile in the country. "

Good news at least for London - Red Ken has been threatening this for a few weeks so if he has started it

Livingstone distancing himself from New Labour for Mayor Cam

because the Mayoral election is approaching, and he is trailing in the polls.
It is his Government who is responsible for the closures, implemented by their appointees, AL & AC.
The closures are unpopular in London as elsewhere, and are likely to hit Labour in the Greater London elections.
I have a feeling that the legal action will be quietly dropped after the elections.
Even if it were to go ahead and was successful in getting a judicial review, he is only seeking to get the consultation
period extended from 6 to 12 weeks.
If the Courts were to order an extension of the consultation period, PO management would still ignore any
opposition and go ahead with the closures, only a few weeks later.
