The CWU is appealling to businesses in Stoke-On-Trent to try and halt the closure of the Royal Mail Delivery office in Leek Road.

Royal Mail intends to close the delivery site and may create a new larger one in the area but it is thought that as much as 70% of mail destined for Stoke-On-Trent is already being processed in Wolverhampton.

The CWU say that the moves are causing a deterioration in services that is having a direct effect on local business and is trying to gather support but Royal Mail says it needs to improve efficiency and that the closure would be part of a larger plan to combine some operations in the region.

Several key delivery offices across the UK have been earmarked for closure including the Bishop Street sorting office in Coventry which employs over 600 workers. Royal Mail is working on a restructuring plan to centralise processing operations in various parts of the country. Cooperas Hill in Liverpool,the scene of wildcat strikes last year, is also rumoured to be facing the axe as Royal Mail looks at ways to cut operating costs and modernise.

Liverpool,s Copperas Hill was a purpose built building, it was state of the art when first opened, in their world of cutting & slashing,they want it to close and transfer the work to warrington putting yet more traffic on the roads that are already overcrowded,now that is common sence eh good luck with your fight to keep your office,s alive

Seems to me that the plan is to axe hundreds of delivery offices and just run everything from super-hubs. The logistics of doing that seem complex enough but it would seem to the way things are going.

To be honest, it is merely mirroring most other utilities but remains stuck in the midst of a commercial battle with its hands tied behind its back.

Tell you what girls and boys wait for the crumbs that fall from the table cause i am sure that Dave and Billys crumbs will be bigger than the fat cats they serve, because although they have done US over i would hope they still have some shame.

I can see that, in the short-term, super-hubs might serve a purpose, since the increasing packet traffic has a large distribution spread from each source. The simplest way to deal with that is to take all the mail to a place that's on an easy route to everywhere in the country, and sort it there.

The hubs shouldn't be used as delivery offices, though. At the moment, that may seem to be the cheapest option, but the financial conditions will change before the capital costs have been recouped. There will be a hefty "carbon tax" added to the price of fuel. There may also be tax relief for businesses whose employees do not need to commute long distances to work. The super-hubs would then become an expensive liability.

Build larger delivery offices if they're needed; but keeping things local is the most sensible, future-proof option.

Its hard to see how local businesses are going to support the Union on this, the quality of service IS abysmal. Shutting Stoke nights most probably wont make things any worse, the real deterioration in service happened when Stoke lost its mailcentre status 10 years ago when this was transferred to Wolverhamton-35 miles away-and 60% of posted mails in Stoke-on-Trent comes back! As a matter of fact the Union executive told us point blanc at the time that IA would be futile it was a 'Fight we couldn't win' so what chance now?
Its not rocket science, they have to slim RM to compete and stay a viable business we've been very lucky to have survived all the major recessions of the past 25 years virtually untouched. Until now.
Our economy is driven by market-based capitalism and im sure its fair to say that most people have bought into this rightly or wrongly.

Ive already mentioned about super hub D.Os months ago, its not rocket science to realise thats where RM want to go, but from what ive heard the delivery staff arent bothered anyway, i dont think they would stand up and fight for anything, the only ones with any b***s are the distribution drivers, theyve had to fight on their own before, i think the delivery staff think us at Burslem are militant and trouble makers, after all RM are a caring employer and would never lie, cheat or do anything underhanded to their employees, YEAH RIGHT, it doesnt matter now if your office is compliant or classed as troublesome, RM will walk all over you when ever they like, ide rather go down fighting...UNITY IS STRENGTH.

Seems funny that two of the more upstanding areas in our struggle for a fair wage and fair treatment from H&B cases have now been EARMARKED.. For closure..... HAHAHAHAH WTF is EARMARKED????
