Bully the bullies? Read and weep?

I have been in this job now for over ten years and i speak from my heart.Maybe a few others on here have gone through or are still expierencing it? Some mornings i hate going through those DO doors and waiting for the first sarcastic comment ( banter). from the bully boys. You know the ones. I enjoy the good old banter whilst sorting about the football etc. But the bully boys then start and you have to shut up. You try to avoid walking past them. You go on the sort and they make stupid childish comments, so that everyone can hear.And their so called mates laugh with them at you.I know several very nice people in my office who just come into work keep quite and go out on there duty. There is banter and banter. But when you go out on your duty (freedom at last!) the bully boys comments are still going over your mind. Worse still to come? You go home. And the comments start coming back in your mind.Then you start saying to yourself wish i had said that back to them. To late now.Another day tommorow. Hope they avoid me? Okay i agree RM have a helpline on this.And trying to get zero tolerance. But honestly, if you see your DOM and report it, would you name names? Because you and i know the bullies will know who you are when they called into office. Your life would just get worse? The odd thing about the bully is when you meet them in the street on there own, they are as nice as pie? Roll on tommorow. Back to usual?

If its serious stuff they are talking about then report it and name names. This also goes for any management using bullying and harassment tactics of any nature. You've got to have a pair of balls me ol' luv and fight, something thats been sadly lacking in the UK for years.

Why not first tell them to button it and if that don't work see your union rep and get him to have a quite word with the people involved!. For if all else fail's they have been warned and you have tried your best to resolve the situation!. YOU ONLY HAVE ONE OPTION BUT YOU ALREADY HAVE SAID IT!.

I have just 9 years in - 6 as a unit rep. I had never been a union member before but one of the main reasons why I became a rep - was the treatment that the 'bully boys' gave to the weak - in our office. 3 people & their hangers on - ran our office - with the total approval & assistance of management. Everyone is entitled to be treated with dignity & respect! If you are getting probs & management turn a blind eye - speak to your rep. If you have no rep - find out who the branch 'Equal Ops' rep is & speak to them. I am assuming that you are a member of the CWU. I have Equal Ops training & have been successful in stopping 'over the top' behaviour - in our D.O. We still have a 'shop-floor' sense of humour - but in this day & age - there are lines that must not be crossed. If you would like to pm me - I shall explain the B & H procedure to you - whether you are a CWU member - or not. Do not be wary of going to work. Nobody should have to suffer that!

You, a friend or another colleague are allowed to informally appoarch the bullies and tell them to stop, and tell them if their unacceptable behaviour does not change you will be informing the manager and the union and also you will be calling the bullying and harassment helpline for the CWU or RM. You need to phone your branch and ask for the Equality Officer you can also fill a HCD1 form as an knowledge that you are experiencing harassment and bullying, but please phone up your branch because bullying and harassment is serious and RM have a strong policy on bullying and harassment your colleague can be suspended if they are not careful. Your can also get bullying and harassment leaftlets from your branch or unit rep or you can log onto the CWU website and get information on bullying and harassment. Furthermore, you can ask to speak to someone from the DRAW group, please do not sit there in silence.

I am a firm believer in trying to sort things out informally. But if you don't feel able to, or it hasn't worked, use the B&H proceedures. Bullies rely on you not wanting to risk making things worse, and will often try to claim that it is harmless banter, and you're overreacting. But the fact is, that it doesn't wash anymore.

So far, I have never come across a situation where anyone with a valid B&H complaint has been criticised for naming names. No-one likes a bully, and it's in ALL our interests to stop them. Banter is good fun, but what you described is terrible.
