A postman, who has hung up his postbag after serving a town for nearly two decades, has been left overwhelmed by the support and love he’s received.
Mick Conroy started working as a postman in Bury St Edmunds in 2006 and has spent the last nine years delivering letters, parcels and presents around the Howard Estate.
The 65-year-old, who turns 66 next month, held a celebratory ‘thank you’ event at the New Bury Community Centre on Wednesday to mark his retirement from the postal service on July 15.
Mick said: “I’ve honestly enjoyed every single minute of it and I couldn’t have asked for more.
“I’m very sad to go and I’m proud of what I’ve done, but now is the right time for me to step away.
“I’ve received so many cards and messages and have had a lot of love sent my way. I’ve been very overwhelmed by it all.”
Mick, who lives in Maltings Way, Bury, started working as a postman in June 2006 after he left RAF Marham in Norfolk to run the Kings Arms pub, where he was a manager for 18 months.
A refurbishment at the pub meant Mick began working elsewhere, before settling on a career as a postman.
“I’ve been very grateful for my time in the Royal Mail and it’s been a real pleasure,” he said.
“I’ve had some great colleagues and met so many great people too.
“When I’ve been delivering the post, I’ve had members of the community offer me hot drinks in the cold weather, such as tea and biscuits, and in the hot weather recently I’ve been offered cold drinks, which have hugely appreciated.”
Mick added: “On the Howard Estate, I’ve known so many residents for nearly a decade and never had a problem with any of them. They’ve all been brilliant.”
Now he’s retired from the postal service, Mick is ‘taking it easy’ for the next few months.
He has nothing major planned aside from some day trips and he is open to picking up some odd jobs here and there if he ‘gets bored’.
