Royal Mail has agreed to a three-year settlement on pay and improvements to employees’ terms and conditions.
This builds on the original December 2024 agreement between EP Group, which acquired Royal Mail’s parent firm, and the Communication Workers Union (CWU). The terms cover all CWU employees at Royal Mail.
The three-year pay deal will ensure workers at the organisation see their pay match or rise above inflation for the next three years. In the first year, they will receive a 4.2% pay rise backdated to 1 April and improvements to overtime and scheduled attendance.
In the second and third years, employees will receive pay rises that match inflation rates. However, if it is less than 2% in either year, they will receive a minimum of 2%, and if it is above 3% in either year, they can trigger a reopener clause.
The union has also agreed with EP Group to trial and implement a new incentive scheme to give all employees a realistic chance of additional earnings, as well as an improved voluntary redundancy settlement and an increased maximum entitlement of 52 weeks.
Furthermore, the union is finalising the terms of the employee collective benefit trust, with 10% of any dividend due to members once the organisation returns to profit, and will conclude sick pay arrangement negotiations and introduce an improved agreement by September.
A Royal Main spokesperson said: “This is a pivotal moment in the history of Royal Mail. It builds upon the groundbreaking agreement reached between EP Group, the government and the CWU last December and it is crucial that all members, reps and branches understand the link between the two agreements.
“These agreements offer everyone the chance to move on from the most bitter dispute in the history of the organisation and the damaging managerial actions that have continued since. Ultimately, the change of approach we have seen nationally will filter to where it matters: in the workplace.”

The main thing was there was no strings attached, and they did not touch our allowances as they alone in some sectors our crown jewels of making up our hourly rate

Keeping the allowances is important now. The 3 year deal works out at 2.7% a year.
Without the allowances I think most people on older contracts in my office are on £13.65.
Add the 4.2% and it becomes about £14.22.
Add the second year 2% and it becomes around £14.50
Add the final 2% and the hourly rate will be £14.79 (give or take).
National minimum wage usually goes up on average about 60p an hour, I think last year it went up around £1 but that’s not the norm…
So if we use the 60p, minimum wage currently is £12.20 meaning by the end of the 3 year deal postman will be on £14.79 and national minimum wage will be £14.
After that it’ll be a couple of years I reckon before we become minimum wage so it’s important to keep every allowance and paid lunch break etc.

Yes it's a certainty that eventually by fair means or fowl that owner will bring the wages down . With the union being so weak he knows he can attack the allowances at any stage . Although at the moment he's got his visions on other things within the company. Most notibly the property I reckon for a quicker recoup of the 4 billion loan he has that's gaining intrest daily.
I would of liked to of seen a lump sum also offers in the deal as a sweetener . ie from the huge surplus we have in our pension pot . The main thing at the moment is our allowances not touched as for some it works out near £20 an hour with their shift and what not added on . After the three years I think it'll be squeaky bum time as he looks to streamline the business ready to be split after the five year deal I reckon . Remembering he can attack any stage announce compulsory redundancies .
Something will give in the next five years that's for sure . An aging workforce and a weaker union year after year !

Just for us oldies over 60 -and with the job likely to get worse, I would like to see a national offer of V.R - rumours of understaffed offices being unlikely to be offered V.R I wonder if this is legal ? With pay a lump sum would have been better, we'll soon be offering minimum wage jobs, enticing eh.

I can't ever see there being VRs again on the scale that it was in the past ..if at all !! Everywhere understaffed massively. Very deliberate as they shape the delivery side to deliver later and later until they are a 10pm finish on a Saturday 4pm or later on Sundays etc plus duty structures that become even more unsociable. That'll definitely see people leave paving way for new starters under different contracts and minimal hours like the supermarkets do and increase during busy seasonal periods

I can see VR because the USO will be reduced even more 3 years from now. Letters are going digital. Denmark is leading the way and more will follow in the next few years.

Well I'm still getting documents through the post to sign . They will never go completely for many years imho . I don't think they need to do VRs anymore. The work conditions will get worse and worse . The shift patterns are becoming more unsociable within mail centres . Deliveries will be made to work some Sundays in exchange for Saturdays off etc . They will heap targets on you putting you under pressure and managers seem to want to chuck some kind on conduct code on you now so you have a serious on your record for a year or two .added with an aging workforce. Many will just leave or retire over the years. VRs will be very very limited I think personally now. Your only hope of this is if your office closes and you are given an option to stay on but move or you take VR .
