A postman from Sid Valley has walked more than 52 miles in a day to raise money for charity.

Chris Day-Kerry, a Royal Mail postman, took on the huge walking challenge on Saturday, June 21, following a route across Sid Valley.

The challenge was to walk 100,000 steps in one day, which equates to about 52.3 miles, almost two marathons.

Chris set himself the one-day walking challenge in order to raise money for Sidmouth Hospice at Home.

The date was chosen carefully to coincide with the summer solstice, and throughout the day, he was joined by friends and family members.

He said: "I had been training, of course, but the challenge was still really, really tough for me.

"That said, I did it with pleasure in order to raise funds for Sidmouth Hospice at Home, a charity that is both geographically and emotionally close to my heart.

"For me, it was a monumental feat, but it wasn’t mine alone.

"My fantastic friends and family were with me every step of the way, working out a rota that meant I felt so supported.

"I am amazed by the amount that we’ve raised so far and am so thankful for the support that’s come my way in person, on social media, and through donations."

Sidmouth Hospice at Home is completely funded by donations and provides free specialist end-of-life care to adults in Sidmouth and the Sid Valley community.

Those wishing to donate can do so at Chris' Just Giving Page: justgiving.com/page/allofthesteps.

Sharon Coombes, head of community engagement at the charity, said: "Our fundraisers never cease to amaze me, and I am always bowled over by their willingness to help us, but watching Chris and co set off on their day-long challenge before dawn – at 4am to be precise – was really special.

"Everything about Chris’ challenge echoes the determination, resilience, strength, and kindness that our patients display every day.

"It was brilliant.

"He’s a real Charity Champion."
