Tbh I'd rather do independent anti-BNP campaigning than UAF stuff, I don't have anything against people doing that sort of stuff but the literature is shockingly poor a lot of the time, just flashing 'fascist' around rather than attacking (for example) the sheer economic stupidity of suggesting we can pull out of world markets and hand utilities/industries over to 'British business' without completely destroying the economy. I always find that counter productive.

The BNP supporters hate the way they steal some of their marginal vote*. Griffin and Voice of Freedom (BNP newspaper) spend a surprisingly large amount of time slating them given how utterly irrelevant they are.

* Largely, to has to be said, because UKIP quite often act like BNP-lite

On the subject of what a great guy Churchill was, he may have had a good line in cigars and rousing speeches, but a saint he ain't.

Churchill's support of the Kurdish gassings:
Churchill was particularly keen on chemical weapons, suggesting they be used "against recalcitrant Arabs as an experiment". He dismissed objections as "unreasonable". "I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes... (to) spread a lively terror" In today's terms, "the Arab" needed to be shocked and awed. A good gassing might well do the job.
Churchill's actions during the general strike:
During the General Strike of 1926, Churchill was reported to have suggested that machine guns should be used on the striking miners. Churchill edited the Government's newspaper, the British Gazette*, and during the dispute he argued that "either the country will break the General Strike, or the General Strike will break the country." Furthermore, he was to controversially claim that the Fascism of Benito Mussolini had "rendered a service to the whole world", showing as it had "a way to combat subversive forces" - that is, he considered the regime to be a bulwark against the perceived threat of Communist revolution.

*Using paper confiscated from radical publishers, it was a simple slandering machine against the strikers.
also
His expressed contempt for ideas such as public health care and for better education for the majority of the population in particular produced much dissatisfaction amongst the population, particularly those who had fought in the war.
So no NHS, social care or state education for the proles now they had done this glorious service for Britain, had Winston had his way.

(From this)

Oh, further to the pro-fascism bit, a direct quote:
If I had been an Italian I am sure I should have been whole-heartedly with you in your triumphant struggle against the bestial appetites and passions of Leninism... (Italy) has provided the necessary antidote to the Russian poison. Hereafter no great nation will be unprovided with an ultimate means of protection against the cancerous growth of Bolshevism.
In his own words, Churchill saw fascism as the ultimate defence against communism (I'm not, I should make clear, a fan of Leninism). His antipathy to Hitler was not based on great politics or fine motives, but on a rivalry of power. On this point, Churchill also advocated a policy of appeasement to the fascist Franco in Spain (Churchill and Spain The Survival of the Franco Regime, 1940-1945 by Richard Wigg) which directly aided him in consolidating power after his butchery of Spanish anti-fascists despite international condemnation from around the world.

Finally, from the Wikipedia entry on the bombing of Dresden:
Winston Churchill pressed the Secretary of State for Air, Sir Archibald Sinclair: "I asked [last night] whether Berlin, and no doubt other large cities in east Germany, should not now be considered especially attractive targets. …Pray report to me tomorrow what is going to be done"
This is backed by the Churchill centre here, though they couch it slightly differently it is clear his authority lay at the heart of the action.

My family have lost members in the first and second world war and are Irish, I also have served for this country and the blokes I served with came from all over the place, so, please explain your version of British Nationalism, my version is proud to be British and all those who live in this country and pay taxes are entitled to live here without being subjected to discrimination by Facsists or Nazies or bigoted BNP members.
The British National Party exists to secure a future for the indigenous peoples of these islands in the North Atlantic which have been our homeland for millennia. We use the term indigenous to describe the people whose ancestors were the earliest settlers here after the last great Ice Age and which have been complemented by the historic migrations from mainland Europe. The migrations of the Celts, Anglo-Saxons, Danes, Norse and closely related kindred peoples have been, over the past few thousands years, instrumental in defining the character of our family of nations.

ps, added, bnp are NOT bigoted - end of.

How about puting more effort into making the world a better place and getting people off the dole as well? That would gut down on genuine refugees fleeing genuine perscution and reduce the number of migrant workers needed. Compulsory agriculture sector jobs for the unemployed claiming benefit might reduce the need for migrant workers, but in that case reform of the NI fund would be needed? I would expect to see a reduction in my contibrutions if that were to happen.

Next time im having sunday dinner i will say a word of thanks to the migrant workers who work the land and therefore enable me to have my vegatables!

UK employers take on migrant workers of their own free will!

Who is a bigger strain on public services unemployed claiming benefits and not paying anything in to the system or migrant workers who pay tax and NI?

We should be proud that those fleeing perscution feel that the UK is a safe and decent place to come to!

On a personal note, a distant relation got her left arm shot off on the streets of Mountain Ash in 1926,another topped himself cos of the pressure he failed to endure for providing food to the strikers.

Ricky Bruch wrote: Hell if you were to go to some countries and preach ANYTHING that opposed that country then more than likely the populous would either kill you or you`d end up in a stinking jail for not being patriotic...
If their members feel so patriotic about their country then let them, we have enough immigrants, ethnic minorities within this country that class themsleves not as *English/British* but by the country of their parents origin yet they were born here..... This alone shows that there are LARGE swathes of people out there that have no allegence(sp) to this country even though they were born & bred here, hence the fragment state we are in and it will only get worse.
So when you have the CWU alienating people because of their beliefs/loyaties you have to ask yourself were next will it go?
This is a tricky situation and one that is alienating certain sections of society and could lead to problems in the future...

Ricky I think your post above is very well put, just my opinion.
I`ll just add that it was interesting to read some of the historical quotes regarding Churchill. As someone said, choose your heroes very carefully and that goes for whoever yours might be. If you dig deep enough, you`ll find something. As the Stranglers said "No More Heroes any more".

Rob Ray your take on Churchill is similar to mine never liked they guy. A very good bloke at getting the country behind the forces during the war and strong enough to hold it together for most of the war. But he is the one who told Portal to start attacking cities during the war :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Area_bombing_directive
The Area bombing directive was an Air Ministry directive issued to RAF Bomber Command on 14 February 1942, eight days before Air Marshal Arthur Harris became Air Officer Commanding (AOC) of Bomber Command.
But when after Dresden it started to look as though Area Bombing was going to be a political hot potato he drop Bomber Command and Harris in it fast.

His biggest military mistake though was Gallipoli

http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/gallipoli.htm
Gallipoli was one of the Allies great disasters in World War One. Gallipoli was the plan thought up by Winston Churchill to end the war early by creating a new war front that the Central Powers could not cope with.
There are also some who say the reason why Iraq is in such a mess and always has been is because Churchill had a hand in creating a country which did not exist.

http://www.search.ie/shop/irish-5000-07 ... _Iraq.html
To make amends after the Great War, Churchill created the nation called Iraq and made the Hashemite leader, Feisel, king of a land to which he had no connections

Well put TBT, if only people would use a bit of common sense, and read a few different books to gain a balanced opinion on things, they might be able to put forward a decent argument, instead of the usual one sided drivel that their mate in the pub told them so it must be right.
Being intelligent is not wrong, neither is being a total idiot (I'm aiming for the latter), but there is no excuse in this day and age for being uninformed. If you can turn your computer on, you can use the internet for more than porn and social networking.

Good point Mr. Essex. Isn't weird how far-right extremists always seem to want to put there stuff 'in yer face' with the most tenuous of links to the original debate?

I say let them have their rants and allow the counter arguement to be put; or to put it another way: allow decent people to bury them in the hole that they have dug for themselves. :Boo hoo!

BTW fair comments about Churchill, although he was a great war leader I did secretly like it when he got a mohican haircut atop his statue during the May Day protests a few years back! :Very Happy
