Maybe Royal Mail should have the new contracts they want us to sign waiting for the people who cross the picket line as they are obviously happy with Royal Mails proposals and would sign them without a 2nd glance.
Everybody who takes industrial action is going to find the next few weeks a little harder but we all knew it was coming and all had the opportunity to do a little overtime and tighten our belts a little to prepere ourselves for it.
Personally i know i will struggle but will still not be crossing any picket line.
I really dont think (i cant afford to strike) is a good enough reason however if you truly believe that whats on offer is a good deal then good luck, turn your backs on your collegues.
It is a real pity that the business would not impose the new deal on the people who cross the picket line.
That way the spineless few would not benefit from masses struggle.

Who do you think negotiated that if your banned from driving you get a cushy indoor job? RM? NO it was the CWU. Why should RM continue to employ a convicted drunk driver? what message is this sending out? I personally don't think you deserve an indoor job you should have been slung out of the job when you lost your license, you take take take....Lager Chimp wrote:I was banned from driving due to drink/drive conviction. I was forced to give up driving but just cannot give up the drink.
This is the one area that really bugs me. Lager Chimp if you are eventually sacked from RM - Who are you going to go to for help? the CWU?
and by your attitude and drinking habits your certainly heading that way.
I'm not even going to tell you to get help 'water & horse' comes to mind.

I don't think we should have a go at Lagerchimp - I think he will realise that it is in his interests to stand by his colleagues, and to support the strikes. We have a lot of people with drink problems at my mail centre. Unfortunately the late shifts and stresses of the job does drive some people to it, and it is an illness, and those who recognise they have a problem are on the way to dealing with it hopefully. And most (if not all) of those who do have a drink problem have supported the strikes and will be supporting the strikes next week.

Apology or Explanation ?
My previous post might of been misunderstood or taken in the wrong context ! I have never crossed a line nor shall we and i fully agree with the action we have been forced to take by the 2 numnuts in charge, However I was and always will defend the individuals right to disagree with what we do ! Or because off personal circumstances be unable to support US. I am proud to off been in the services during 2 conflicts to fight for individual freedom so my views are fairley obvious. To that extent my reasons for takeing action are obvious because we will no longer have the freedom to refuse to work extra hours at the drop of a hat or whim !! ( by the way, we loose the house income as were both OPG's ).
I Will not stand on a picket line for that reason because my personal view is it is imtimidating for those who do not agree with us. I agree whole heartedly with beutifull south if there happy give them the new contracts ! that is there choice ! but it is a choice !
To answer Beutifull south on the second point denying funds to an alchoholic normally means there family goes without so they can have there Lager !
I hope this clears up one or two points

semacsorter: Your description matches me to a tee (16 years in) except that I do go on the picket line. I must be lucky though our picket is pretty laid back and so far we have had no strike breakers here. If we did I am fairly sure that they would be treated fairly and, at least on the picket line they would not be intimidated into striking, they would I hope be made aware of our views on the situation.
If I thought that the picket would become violent or intimidating I would walk away from it. I don't agree with strike breakers and would probably no longer class them as mates, more as colleagues, however, in a democracy they are entitled to their views and as long as they are fully aware of the consequences of their action, I would support their right to make their own choice, no matter how deluded that choice may be.
In a Democracy you have to be prepared to accept and in some cases defend the right of an individual to have and voice a differing point of view, even if it is diametrically opposed to your own. Of course this does not include racism, sexism and subjects which are plain illegal.

When the N***s came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn't a Jew.
When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.
Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984)
I'll be on the line, there can be no excuses.
I see the picket line as much more than just trying to convince the strike breakers of the error of their ways,
but as a visual protest to show :lfo and :cfo and all their coffee drinking work shy underlings
that we care about this job even if they don't.

Maintain your dignity. You will feel angry when the scab managers cross the line, but once you realise these individuals are no more than scum, and not worth bothering with, you'll just laught at them. You won't get away with shouting 'scab' or making gestures, but your presence will wind them up. Have a lovely time. You'll be standing amongst your own class and fighting for a good cause. No manager could understand that. A working class hero is something to be, as a fellow scouser once said, and he was right!doorstep it wrote:I'm on the picket line for the 1st time this weekend. What can I be expected to do, get away with etc.....
