Postal union set for more strikes

The trouble is the union have backed themselves into a corner,these strikes have been about deliveries,and not mail centres.If it comes to it I will drop out of the union and go into work.

Please be our guest, go into work. But remember that you will be getting the benefits our striking has brought when it is all over... that will probably help pay the mortgage. I hope you will be able to look in your colleagues eyes, because their eyes will be looking right through you. We all have financial commitments, most of us have kids we are no different from you, apart from the fact we have guts and the determination to fight for our jobs and our livelihoods.

Anyone that thinks this is a "just deliveries" matter is not thinking straight...It's about all aspects and functions. Deliveries are getting the brunt of the "Modernisation" at the moment but do you think it will stop there....I was aksed when we got back off the last strike to go out to a rural office on delivery...I declined...As for not sending you out to deliveries with out re-training well they do that now with the casuals and the agency staff so what amkes you think they won't try it with you. This us and them mentality you have is divisive and just what management want...No likes or can afford to lose the days money on a strike day....But the possibility of that loss turning into a permanaent loss when Leighton starts to wield the axe if he gets his way becomes a frightening reality if we don't stand up now and fight back....Just because you came in and came out of the union won't make you immune from the axe when it whisltes down...In fact Knowing leighton's track record he'll most likely be targetting those who did cross the picket line and non union members first as they'd have no back up.

Have a look at the jobs currently advertised on Royal Mail's website.

They all request flexibility, and state you may be asked to work in a neighbouring office.

We have one of these new contracts in our office, and he's been sent to another DO for the last 3 weeks, covering a different turn each day with no training.

It can happen to anyone in any function.

I work in a mail centre and really. let's be honest. We're going to bear the brunt of automation. Forget worrying about flexibility. Half of us aren't going to have a job if it isn't handled correctly.

They would maybe swap us onto another shift,but I certainly cant do that as I have childcare to think of.

and you believe royal Mail would take that into account. I admire your optimism but the later starts are causing me problems and they are not willing to allow me to start earlier and finish earlier than my co-workers. At the moment in DOs its a case or like it or lump it. I've chose to lump them

tbt, u made a good point. later starts thats happening rite now. errosion of service, there is no service now when we delivering past midday. closure of post offices, if we dont use them we lose them and since this government dont need the post offices we dont use them. soz to sound so down but whats the union been doing last few years ??? i b back on the picket line if called for as we gota stop this govenment killing a great british service. but do u fink we've let fings slip to far ???

Postal workers are threatening a fresh wave of national strikes by the end of the month unless a bitter row over pay and conditions is resolved.

Talks ended at the weekend without agreement and union leaders have warned that Royal Mail is about to implement changes to the conditions of postal workers.

The Communication Workers Union said: "Despite being committed to further talks and being determined to reach an agreement, CWU will announce further strikes to be held prior to the end of September."

The union said Royal Mail had improved its original 2.5 per cent pay offer which was heavily rejected by postal workers and led to a series of national walk-outs over the summer which crippled postal services.

Royal Mail is now offering a two-year deal worth 6.7 per cent, according to the union.

But officials complained that the organisation was sticking to rejected proposals on pensions including increased employee contributions and later retirement age.

The two sides have also not agreed changes to conditions such as the start of early shifts.

A union spokesman said officials had offered to continue the "period of calm" following its decision in the summer to suspend its campaign of industrial action to allow talks to continue.

He said: "They have refused to extend the period of calm and they are indicating that they are going to start implementing changes from next Monday."

The union said it believed Royal Mail was about to scrap early starts, which would cost postal workers up to £25 a week and would lead to later deliveries.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "The period of calm was an agreed period - yet we have told the union both yesterday and today that we are very happy to keep talking.

"There is no decision on the timing of operational changes. Postmen and women will not lose money. (So we weren't told of an operational change this morning when told about later starts. )

"The changes we need to make are a direct result of EU transport legislation which restricts the speed of trucks and which means mail will get to delivery offices later - but we've offered that any postmen and women affected will keep their early start allowance in full as long as they continue in their current job even though they will be starting later.

"Our clear aim in consulting on pensions is to protect our existing people's pensions as far as possible and not increase their contributions - while what the union wants is to keep the scheme open to new recruits, even though they know it will disadvantage our postmen and postwomen who already work for the company."
