CWU calls for 'no' vote in Scottish referendum

union reps turned up for a couple of days jolly at bournemouth and decided for it's 17k members in scotland that they would be best served voting no without so much as seeking their views first.

The CWU's National Executive Committee recommended a 'no' vote based on the outcome of two branch forums, a series of independent member meetings and two polls of members. The results of these polls showed the majority of Scottish members would vote 'no' (60%) and 26.3% of members would vote 'yes'.

Did Scottish members of the CWU get a vote at Bournemouth?

Ask your local rep for a form, my area rep had it printed off for me, i filled it out, political levy stopped, easy as that, it's only 20p a week but it's 20p i'd rather not give to the labour party.

Be careful about cancelling your politcal levy , without a politcal levy the union could not campaign against privisation including the remaining 30% , the union cannot campaign against off comm and unfair competition , the union cannot campaign on closures of Mail centres , RDCs and relocation of delivery offices. It could not campaign against post office closures , argue politically against the new tribunal rules , zero hours , anti employment laws , support other unions who are taking strike action , campaign against the BNP etc and an hundred other inportant issues.

Unions are not allowed to use any of their general fund to campaign on the above. The union has to every 5 years allow members to vote on whether the union has a politcal fund and the next ballot is in October.

Only £3.30 per member from the politcal fund goes to the Labour Party and under the Collins report all members will next year before the next election have to give their indivdual consent for any money to go to the Labour Party. However if you remove yourself from the politcal levy altogether then the union loses the ability to campaign to keep the remaining 30% stake in public hands , fight against TNT from having an unfair playing field in terms of end to end delivery which will threaten the USO and our futures.

I wonder if the Union need to look at engaging ordinary members more. I certainly don't feel engaged by HQ, yet I am quite active within the local unit.

Are you talking about the free movement of people in Europe - which isn't Labour policy, it is enshrined in the Treaty of Rome. (Article 48)?
Or are you talking about immigration from outside the EU?
What was Labour's policy on that? And how did it effect anything?
