3 pouches=less than 30kg of mail !

Nobody in my office delivers less than 60kg of mail
and most days anything up to a 100kg
this is approximately the normal range
and can be verified by the thousands of posts on this forum.

5 times a 15kg bag is "normal" for me.

government ministers, rm managers, and civil servants all push the three lies as i call them.
1 postman have easy jobs ;liar
2 mail is in decline ;liar
3 the royal mail is failing and needs privatising. ;liar

none of these three stand up to scrutiny.
Now thats the reality of the situation... people reading the Guardian article will think that ALL posties will be the same as the Mount Pleasant postwoman leading to the false impression when they here of RM giving us more work its US that are being unreasonable. That and it's tell the politicians that they can hammer us coz theres plenty of slack in the system.

Anybody know the postwoman in question? I was wondering if the journo has stitched her up?
The journo seems sympathetic - it's more likely that the manager stitched her up when he learned that a journalist wanted to do a piece on working for RM, so, naturally, he picked one (presumably) of the easiest walks in that office.

By definition you can't earn less than the minimum wage... thats why its called the minimum wage!

Less than Minimum wage is we would be getting in the new order, if this Dutch experience is anything to go by, there will be a loophole found, €3 an hour is really low, be better off on dole for that.

spot on -
earning about five euros an hour, although the legal minimum wage in the Netherlands is between eight and nine euros an hour.

Indy wrote:For those that can pull themselves away from a certain wedding theres an article in The Guardian's G2 section entitled 'Second Class Service". Its worth reading even if you have to go to a library or borrow the paper off somebody.

The first section describes whats happening on the continent with regards postal delievery is just down right terrifying..... full of part timers with mail delivered to their houses for sorting and then delivery. People sorting mail on there beds or in a cafe  People paid a complete pittance even below the minimum wage. Manager at a Royal Mail showcase Mail Centre (Gatwick) "didn't see why [continental system] couldn't work in the UK'

Then the reporter went to Mount Pleasent and went on a walk with a 'postwoman', fair enough....she says she has 25 years seniority so has a good walk, fair enough, says she skips her break, hmmmmm.... then she says she FISHISHES AT 12 O'CLOCK

My blood pressure went off the scale..... I just feel so bloody ANGRY..... I don't finish at 12 nor does anyone I know nor do they finish anywhere close to 12. On a heavy day I struggle to finish on time even if I run my walk. So now everyone who reads that article is going to think lazy sodding postman/women working half a day and complaining that RM is giving them more work to take them to the time there paid till. I hope that if its a 'real' postwoman they feel ashamed of themselves!
Must have been a Tuesday ,most city walks get 6 to 9 bags of mail per long day dont they, also noticed she didnt have a break.Perhaps she's part-time ?

If you haven't read the whole article then stop posting rubbish! It isn't about the women with an easy walk, it's much deeper than that, and incredibly interesting!

True enough but its a big article and needed breaking up into talking points.
heres one:
Do i want my mail sorted on someones kitchen table/bed or whatever surface is convenient ?
The big picture:
This article suggests that to "go dutch" is now codeword for introducing a part time workforce.

JUPITER'S COCK! (Thanks to RMC for my latest curse, and 50p to Postman!) :Very Happy That was a Bloody long read...But very Interesting. I've gone right of Dutch Housewives now, I thought they were the future of mail delivery. Fancy finding out that their mail volumes ARE NOT FALLING as well!

Strongly agree that we shouldn't listen to the Bullshit that these parasitic, blood-sucking excuses for Managers are allowed to spout! 2nd generation Irish? My Arse. Pity his dad hadn't had the forethought to wear a condom!!! How these over-paid vultures are allowed to control the lives of ordinary working folk is beyond me. :hmmmm

As for the 2 hour delivery, 9kg bag postwomen. I think she was probably stitched up by her DIM. :no no Imagine this journo going out with a HEAVY days work and having to sit there while the Postie phoned the office to say he was cutting off and would be bringing 2 bags of mail back to the office.

Bloody Interesting Post TBT and worth the read. :Applause

From the article " He showed me a day's work from just after Christmas: three rounds, sorting and delivering 323 pieces of mail, weighing a total of 81.4kg, to 279 addresses. Sandd claimed this should take six hours; Leijten said it took eight. For this he was paid a little over €27 – not much more than €3 an hour "

Thats why the s**t "dutch model" would never work here! Unrealistic mail volumes, bring it on and if they did use casual labour then watch theft go through the roof!

Something that the union has been aiding all along with its refusal to look at getting rid of Saturdays. If we are losing mail then that is the only way to protect full time work.

slightly spurious
your saying the union should throw its weight behind ending Saturday working- to protect full time jobs- because we are losing mail?
cant say i agree with your logic
nor that we are losing mail

The fact that rm want to move to a part time workforce is independent of the volume of mail, :hmmmm
it would still be their aim if the mail was halved or doubled!
Part timers/ temporary contracts -these are workers you can bend to your will
they very often never reap the benefits of full contracts or hours
they also tend not to be unionized or well informed as to their rights
because if you work 4 hours a day say 10 till 2 you often dont meet the full timers to swap info.
The car industry has been doing this for years .
a friend worked at bmw he had four 3month contracts in a row :no no
Its happening for political and financial reasons! Saturdays and mail volume nothing to with it.

if Saturdays were to go i have no idea how rm would re-jig everything
not for our benefit thats for sure.

Postal horror stories

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/may/0 ... vatisation" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The Guardian, Tuesday 3 May 2011
Article history
Your article (G2, 29 April) was illuminating in depicting the travails of the postie in the liberalised Dutch mail system. As one at the receiving end of this delivery service, I'd like to affirm that life for the customer has also deteriorated considerably since deregulation. Post from the UK, which used to take four or five days to reach the Netherlands, now regularly takes one to two months. Increasingly, envelopes arrive with edges ripped open to check if the contents are worth pilfering, and sometimes disappear altogether. On one occasion, a vinyl record was bent to fit through my letterbox. Friends relate similar horror stories.

What makes all this bad service intensely frustrating is the fact that one is never sure which service has made the delivery and therefore to whom a complaint may be made. The users of the UK postal service should be made aware that a "liberalised" system along Dutch lines is adopted very much at their expense.
