Yeah it doesn't cost much atall to fully charge the batteries were only talking a handfull of car batteries here.
Anyway cost is not an issue to RM on this one as we will all be taking them home at night to plug them in to our own sockets. Apparently we will get 2p extra per week for it!

The vast majority of electric, 'zero emission' cars are powered by lithium-ion battery packs because of their lightness and ability to hold charge. However, despite emitting no harmful tailpipe emissions on the move, the 'life cycle' costs of producing electric cars on a grand scale is already causing some debate, with battery firms, and car makers, accused of pillaging poorer countries for the natural lithium resource set to become as lucrative as oil.
Over half the world's lithium is under the Bolivian desert, and exponentially more will be needed when people finally shift from internal combustion to electric power. It is estimated that over 420,000 tons of raw lithium carbonate are needed to make 60 million small plug-in cars: that's six times more lithium that we produce now. However, it is also believed that nine million tones could be mined from the Salar De Uyuni plains in Bolivia, and car maker Mitsubishi is part of a group already attempting to set up mining facilities there.
But the problem is that mass mining for lithium is invasive and causes catastrophic damage to the landscape, something the lithium extractors of Bolivia fear. Saul Villagas, a worker at Bolivian lithium extraction firm Comibol, said: “Let me make this very clear for everyone to hear. The previous imperialist model of exploitation of our natural resources will never be repeated in Bolivia.“ In nearby Chile, the damage of lithium mining is already apparent, with miles and miles of empty salt plains visible, uninhabitable after lithium mining poisoned the water supply. Some estimate that mass mining of the Bolivian salt plateau will destroy it in two decades.
Still, others believe the presence of lithium, and the cash bonanza it will bring is a very good thing for Bolivia, and the environmental price is a relatively small one. An economist in the Bolivian city of La Paz, Juan Carlos Zuleta, is one such optimist. He said: “we are one of the poorest countries on Earth with appalling life-expectancy rates. Without development our people will suffer. Getting bogged down in principles and politics doesn't put food in people's mouths.”

besides royal mail use, will it catch on in general public use? i didn't know much about lithium. i do now (above link). think we go back to horse and cart.. then again, cost a lot to keep a horse.. pony express was quite reliable.guarenteed deliver unless got shot on the way tut
