The CWU has got to start getting it's head around the fact, that since 2003 and the introduction of SDD, the job of a walking postie has become very, very, physically demanding. The fact that posties aren't all 20somethings, and like every other human being we get older with each passing day.
The CWU has been trying to preserve F/T jobs, and that has to be applauded, but, and here is where they've got to come back down to planet earth, making an already very tiring, very physically demanding job, even more so, and extending outdoor delivery spans will do exactly that, is not on.

Dingo, would you have fancied being out in the freezing snow today, for 5 HOURS? As one poster has already said, you'll be driving people to jack the job in, or worse, make it even easier for management to get rid of fulltimers who won't be able to cope with the physical stress.

From day one, the union should never have gone along with RM's modernisation plans if they were detrimental to members interests. I barely recognise the job I once loved, so fast has it gone to the dogs, call a halt to the slide please.

Let the fat old feckers in CWU HQ try their hand at one of the new longer deliveries that they suggest we try.

I'd like to see them get their arses out of bed on a Saturday morning five weeks out of six. The pampered, useless, Blairite no-marks.

On a different note, a mate of mine told me he was asked by his DOM this morning when someone mentioned the Sawyer Report: "How do we get that trust back?" My mate told him you can't get something back if it was never there in the first place.

I like many others here are or were local reps, reps on many occasions in offices where you are alone fighting to make others in your office jobs a little better for no reward but prehaps some pride that today you helped a fellow posties life a little easier.

These bullshit agreements that are open to so called local agreements are a disgrace and were revealed in 2007, i promised my workmates the PEC would have learned from 2007 and this time we would nail agreements that would be set in stone for the nation, how wrong i was

Just taken me an age to read through all the great comments (mostly!)
1) GPS is your saviour! Use it to verify a pegasus revision. Royal mail hates the fact that this technology is the only truly accurate measure of a delivery as it accounts for everything you do whilst out on delivery! The truth is a very powerful negotiating tool!! i can give more info if you require! If every delivery rep had this information his job just got so much easier!
2) We must have a national agrement that works for every office. If we don't get that we must reject the deal. Divide and conquer is Royal Mail's main weapon. They always pick on the weakest offices first. Simple management techniques that have a proven history unfortunately! Our agreements are our only power. Even those are broken regulary so this agreement must be totally solid!!
3) I don't know all the answers but as a postie for 28 years i think i have a bit of knowledge. I don't like the idea of a 4-5 hour delivery. It would seem impossible to us old buggers. I would explore split deliveries whereby a meal break is taken at around half distance. This could be pursued easily because of the need for welfare breaks extra travel time would have to be built into all duties. So for instance a four hour delivery using GPS (so its accurate!) would return to office after about two hours for a welfare/ rest break for thirty minutes or so. The remaining delivery would then be completed by a refreshed (at least a bit) postie. To work at the maximum efficiency or 100 BPI it clearly states the need for regular breaks. Your human rights is also a very strong negotiating tool!!

I agree. A return to two deliveries isn't realistic but any longer delivery needs to be split to allow a break in the middle.
A drink, a meal, a change of clothes etc.
Anything else is madness.

Can we not get the guy from Unite union on our case ? I head him on the radio today he made Ward and Hayes sound like amateurs,

I'm old, I'm knackered at the end of every working day, I assume this dingo bloke isnt a delivery postman then ?

I left the union last year, just couldnt justify paying my subs for such a poor return.

Strange how we look at things in a different light aint it? Here we have a member? from MAIL CENTRES/PROCESSING saying a thread about deliveries being discussed by "Posties" is going off thread! How strange is that? when i saw the programme it did not mention CENTRES/PROCESSING it was about delivery of mail and here we have an expert! LOL! Try it yourself and you may change your tune? otherwise--------------------
