If more people just stuck together, our working lives would improve immeasurably.
Whilst bullying is a major issue, I think there is a much bigger one in RM, it's peoples refusal to do anything about it.
If people continue to accept this behaviour, it only ensures that the vicious circle will carry on.

If people are unwilling to protect themselves, and by default their colleagues, then in my opinion it is unrealistic to blame union hierarchy for their failings.
They can only take action if and/or when those on the frontline take action. Which by your own admission, they're not willing to do.
When people are failing to help themselves, how can Reps both local and Area, and the top union brass be blamed for not doing enough?

The lack of unity in the workforce drives me insane.
We have a couple of blokes in our office constantly moaning their duty is too big and that overtime isn't being paid - yet they still COME IN EARLY!! When confronted about this they say "I won't finish unless I come in early" EXACTLY!!! This then has an impact on anyone who cover the duty whilst they're absent who actually does the job by the book. DOM "So and so can finish it time, why can't you!!" Seen it so many times!

Oh whilst we're on the subject can the union stop workers from starting early? Our DOM said they can't and that if members want to start early they can (why anyone would is beyond me, especially as you have to work to our finish time!)

You are both right in what you say.
Our own members are the main cause of the problem, then the management step in to exploit that fact then some more !
Gremlin, the ones who complain the most are more than often the main culprits closely followed by a lot standing on the seniority ticket. Managers cannot fight a lone battle , they rely on a split to make their task easier. The old soldiers know the strings to pull as you mention at revision times. They get the cream the last in part timer gets the s**t.
Wobbly - you are bang on. Without the early starters on a level playing field RM would HAVE to re-look at the work load and more jobs would be re-created. We are our own worst enemies, no one can argue differently, WHY they do it ?? I will never know. I do go on about the bulliying managers a lot, but I also know they try to exploit the early starters for Their own purposes. The innocents suffer for many seniors actions and that is wrong. What's wrong will never be right, the down trodden need support and sticking together is the most simple basic tool that workers have, if only we could get our colleagues to realise that, our battles would be won VERY quickly within RM.
