With the RMT , Alcoholism was regarded as a illness but if someone was disciplined and wriggled out of it with alcoholisim, if they missed as much as one meeting the orginal charge would come into play . Then the Transport Act came out and they wanted rid of that p***y culture. There was managers that wanted Breath Tests etc and the limit was more stringent than for motorists , 1-3 of a pint in the system was the maximum.
They just had purges to get rid of the p***heads , either the p***heads would be working all the OT to pay to P** their money up the wall, or they'd be taking too much time off as quell surprise alcohol is not very good for you and they tended to get infections etc .Best Example was a Liverpool Inspector sacked for failing a breath test as he'd used a alcohol content fresh breath spray. Idiot Managers actually childishly bragged about it.

With RM this sounds like one of Old St's Trendy Decrees about people getting help with Lifestyle /Addiction Problems & RM being this caring, respecting modern employer and earning outside awards & brownie points from the gullible & naive.
So if you've been in and out of hospital & poked & prodded more times than Sooty , harassed back into work accused of being a malingerer and work shy it's OK by RM , and they'll have you through the door .So tell RM Mr Carlsberg & Mr Heinken make you prop bars up and you won't get bullied .[/qu

philips case is just another injustice under the current Attendance Procedure.

Watch Out. There could be far more cses soon.

Industrial action against the RM agreement included a review of the Attendance Procedure. As I understood it RM wanted to make it even more punishing/penal.

Oh! and by the way, IR representation in units is also under review. As I understand it there wont be any reps in offices.

So, Attendance to be stricter, no union reps. What happens at tribunals? I ask because I understand Tribunals wont even consider a case where victims have not had union representation through each stage of the Attendance Procedure.

Hell! Get me out of here, I want to live in a civilised world.

The whole Attendance Procedure is a joke,
managers are supposted to treat every case individually and in the past [20 years ago] used the old 'Common Sense Approach',
but, these days, it seems to me that it is better for rm to have as many people on stages so they are forced to come into work [ill or not],
i have been pulled in for a stage 1, when an incompetent manager had me down sick with 2 weeks flu.He just laughed, when i pointed out that he had got me mixed up with a colleague with the same surname! I told him if he could not do the job properly - retire!

They also tried to put me on a stage 1 when i was off long term sick as the result of an AOD,

This is what we are up against, :pray :pray :pray

Ahhhhhhh my favourite subject!!
The whole things a farce and i've been stitched up by over zealous DIMS,much like every body else no doubt.
Down my way it's not up to our managers anymore apparently, seems it has to go to the DSM 1st and he makes the decision.
WTF is that all about!!!
I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Phillip Doughty, 22, was a popular character around Thurnby, where he had delivered the mail since he was 17.

After having two hospital operations and a bout of chickenpox, the Royal Mail fired him, claiming he had failed to explain his absence....
I'm another Leicestershire postman with a similar story. I was issued a Stage 2 (the first time I'd triggered one) in May 2006. After 12 months (to the day) with no absence, I went sick with chickenpox. I never had it as a child, which makes it a very nasty illness as an adult. I had two weeks off work and came back on June 3rd. I didn't have a RTW interview until the end of my third week back at work, 10 days after that I had the Stage 3 interview. A month after that I was told I was dismissed, with 8 weeks' notice. My manager told me he "couldn't find a reason not to sack me."

There's no way I could have come to work with chickenpox - I had no choice at all but to go sick. If I had turned up to work, I would have expected to have been sent home, and possibly even taken down the Conduct Code for putting other people at risk by coming in to work with an infectious disease.

The worst of it is that no-one in my family's had chickenpox recently, nor has anyone I know: the only possible place I could have caught it is from a member of the public in the Callers Office...at work.

I had an appeal hearing 5 weeks after after my dismissal (7th September) and now, two months on, I am still waiting for the result. My notice period ended 29th September, but my manager graciously agreed to an extension of my notice. Problem is, he won't give me a new date, it's just "until I get the result of the appeal." So for the last five weeks I've been waiting until 11:30 each morning (I'm on lates) and if I haven't had a phone call or letter with the result I put on my blues and come into work. It's like being a casual again.

In total Royal Mail have had 13 weeks so far from the date of my dismissal to conduct an appeal hearing, reach a decision and let me know the outcome. The Appeals Manager blamed the strike for the delay: apparently us lot going out for 4 days means that 8 weeks after the appeal hearing she still hasn't come to a decision.

9 years in the job and it comes to this. How in the name of all that's holy can Royal Mail treat someone like this, but still expect them to turn up to work every day and be motivated to do their best?

lets be honest.for RM, any full timer they can get out the door on the cheap(eg no VR) is a score for them.
