A variety of cargo bikes, trikes, electric scooters, electric bikes etc were all looked at and trialled before the decision was made to go to shared vans and trolleys. For a variety of reasons they weren't suitable. Even the Policy Director of the CTC which led the campaign to retain bikes in RM now concedes that.Lincox wrote:Brain Fury, I agree entirely that the current bicycle has or will become unserviceable as the packet/parcel bonanza continues. However that is not to say that a different type of cycle with 3 wheels and supported by pedalling and with an assisted electric motor, or even a small powered motorcycle with a covered trailer, would have been far more preferable and prevent the user from having to tug or push trolleys around unaided by anything other than the strength or non strength of the human body.

Then why have those trial findings not been made available to the membership, including the reasons why they were not deemed suitable, and the comparisons in HEALTH as well as safety between the methods chosen and those that were trialled.

It wasn't a question of comparing the bikes, trikes etc design with the vans and trolleys and choosing the best. The former didn't work so RM looked for an alternative.

So, an alternative without any cost, health and safety comparisons. Just a typical Royal Mail trial of one system without any logic and we are going to make it work regardless of any impact assessment.

How do you know what assessments were made?
