Monopoly what monopoly - TNT in West London trial - TNT in Liverpool Trial (fizzled out). TNT, DHL, UKMail etal - Down stream access where we were losing an estimated 2p per letter delivering them the final mile. In effect apart from TNT in a limited area, we are providing the service which the other companies are riding on.

Packets - Nope not there either, unless its to the Highland, Islands and difficult to reach areas.

Of course there is one Monopoly that we are still operating under, although not sure we can ever make a profit - the USO.

What needs to happen to keep RM in the game is for everyone to play on a level playing field, all companies should provide either some form of Universal Service, or help subsidise it. It used to be that part of the subsidy was we did not pay VAT, well even that's been changed.

Increases in stamp prices are a red herring.
Revenue from stamped mail is nothing compared to the business streams.
The stamp prices were increased to make room for increases in everything else including DSA because you can't increase what you charge business customers and keep stamp prices the same.
I think in business they call it creating headroom between what you charge your major bulk customers and what you charge the mug punters with one letter to post.

The public will use second class stamp instead.

i already am and i dont think i'll be the only one which will end up with the majority of the mail being delivered being second class which will ultimately result in all the mail being lumped in together

If you worked in deliveries you would know that stamped mail whether it's first or second is rarer than hen's teeth so it's unlikely that it would make any difference.
