Personally, I'd rather work Mon-Fri with Sat an Sun off every week, and let anyone who wants to work on the Saturday be paid double-time, and charge a premium to anyone wanting their mail delivered to pay for it.
Your total hours will drop and your hourly rate will then increase to keep you at your current level, the reduction in hours will probably be over a 2-3 year span with minor pay rises built into that.

------- and surrendering paid breaks -

We give up 3hrs 20min in paid breaks - Royal Mail only then have to increase the hourly rate by a certain % to cover the 1hr 40 minute they are giving up each week.

So basically we will be standing still in pay terms for a reduction of 20 minutes in a days work

So, if I understand this correctly an example of the new format will be (as in many retail businesses) - attendance for eight hours but only paid for seven, with an unavoidable one hour unpaid relief period to be taken within those hours. And I suppose Royal Mail are hoping that most people will work through that relief period to cope with the increased workload.

What agreement is this? Is there any actual paperwork on this? Would calling strikes be not honouring the "deal".

Would you buy a second hand car from these two?
:Applause :Applause :Applause hit it right on the head. What agreement? And an agreement by 20 Jan 2010? I wonder what odds the bookies are putting on it. Royal Mail can't walk away?! What's going to stop them?! "It will show people they don't want an agrement". Do they give a toss, the right wing press, tories, and labour government will back them! Tbh i dont think even Dave Ward and the other PEC members believe their own arguments, how could anyone with their eyes open, it is just to keep us quiet.
You're both right comrades. We haven't had a ballot on this so-called agreement.

Yes and this will be trumpeted by the union as some kind of victory

I do not think either Royal Mail or the CWU have really explained the scale of change that is being disucssed in the national talks.

Take walk sequecing the fact is that not only will that decrease IPS and Prep but it will deliver 40% of the work to a delivery office considerably later then now and in some cases where the office is located a considerable distance from where walk seqencing machine is it could be as late as 10 in the morning. The bussiness case for walk seqeuncing does not allow for the first 60% of work to be sorted first.

So the dilema for the union is this if work is going to be coming in later and you have protenially lost up to 20% of your workload maybe more in some cases then how do you protect full time jobs.

On an 8 hour day it will be come more differcult even given the fact that Royal Mail now plot deliveries on 3.5 hours first to last point of delivery and then biuld replensihment time on top so in reality walks are longer then 3.5 hours.

The shorter working week is vital for the future but is it something people want to fight for ? Well we have had two 90 mins reductions since 1988 and countless policies on obtaining a 35 hour working week.

Yes the CWU have looked at suggustions on the SWW do we collaspe meal reliefs to increase hourly rates. The Union did this under the profesional drivers agreement. There are pro and cons on this point, the pros are that a lot of members simply work their break in deliveries offices now so we would be increasing the hourly rate , the downside is that it would encourage a lot of members not to take breaks at all.

Now in terms of longer spans well we use to under 2 deliveries have a 2.5 hour first delivery and a 2 hour second delivery per day. I do serious believe that there will no agreed span but the shorter the span the less of a full time job you will have.

If Area Reps, and all reps between them and including Dave Ward came to offices both outside and inside London, across all parts of the country and actually went on a walking duty with us perhaps they would understand the issues more.

I am sorry Dingo, but visiting and talking to posties on the ground or in offices does not show a true picture. You will only get the views of the most vocal or active members. You need to see what it is like on the ground before you can make decisions which will have little effect on your own working day but a massive impact on your members.

Dingo this is not aimed at you specifically but at any full time Union offices or full time released officials. I have said it before and I say it again in my honest opinion all CWU Officers and Officials need to spend at least 1 day a year working in a role which they represent, even if they have gained full time release only in 2007 then they are still very out of date and will have not faced the day to day travails we do.

That is a ridiculous comparision anybody who did seconds will agree with me.
I take it this is aimed at the post SDD guys to make them feel that a 4.5 hour span is acceptable. :chuckle :chuckle
