How will an almost certain election defeat mean things are going to plan? The right of the party will be discredited after this. Meanwhile the Tories will go on the attack, meaning the unions will feel pressure from below through the wider membership to start fighting back, meaning the Labour Party will feel this pressure too. Then, watch all those careerists, Blarite or Brownite (no actual difference in policy) start making left-wing noises because of the pressure they'll find themselves under.
You may be making the common mistake of assuming New Labour was in any way linked to Labour values, times have changed a lot
I'm not making any mistake. I'm well aware the labour leadership are just the Tories shadows but then this was even the case with the first Labour government. There have always been careerists in the party - it was just in the past the labour movement has been stronger and they have only been able to shift the party so far. The pressure from below was there to stop them going any further. The point is to fight the careerists and right wingers within the party - you don't leave the rats the run of the ship! Same with the unions. Again, the issue is bringing that pressure from below - which means rebuilding class confidence and combativeness. Ask yourself what good any of the left has done outside the labour party? All they've done is isolate themselves and the best working class activists.
