It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Hi,
I have just moved back to England after 8 glorious years in the Royal Navy based in Scotland. We're eager to push the whole oil issues far to much since 90% of the oil fields are owned by foreign companies I don't actually think they'd care about where it was landed.
Scottish nationalist need to remember they are in power due to a technicality. They also should remember that there budget only just scraped through with the help of the lib dems.

Scotland has a serious lack of any sort of income and a greater than average number of immigrant workers and dole monkeys, put simply it would not give them the financial independence they want/need. Secondly the SNP have failed to recognise the true financial income of having the MOD/Armed Forces based Up there. Independence would bring 5000+ job losses in West of Scotland from the closure of bases up north. Couple this to BAE's shipyard near Glasgow losing another 2500+ jobs from the contract to build the Super Carriers and Babcock's ship yard in Rosyth(East Scotland) taking another 3000+ jobs. Scotland would be in serious trouble. This without the removal of the RAF and the ARMY. It's not just these people the pull out of the military would affect. A town Like Dumbarton is already a semi-ghost town, kept alive only be the near by naval base. The pull out would force 1 of the 2 major supermarkets out of business.
See here http://business.scotsman.com/nuclearene ... 4943454.jp

The SNP have already conceded there is no way the would be able to form any sort of military and Mr Samond has accepted and rather stupidly believed that the English/Welsh Side of things would provide military backup for them. Since they clearly could not afford there own defence force, let alone staff it!
see here http://news.scotsman.com/snpconference2 ... 2364594.jp
It's my belief that Scottish people voted SNP not for independence but due to lack of option McConnell did nothing for Scotland and Ms Golding does'nt really bring anything to the party. The lib dems? when they turn up will some one sound an alarm.

There crime is up, unemployment is up, immigration is way up whilst companies shutting down is up. They can't get companies to come to Scotland. If fact the only viable thing in Scotland are Oil, Whisky and Sheep. As most factories have now shifted output to 3rd World countries.

It's actually RBS that would become the bank in-charge of things and lets face it they are in no position to attempt to take on a nations finances.

I know this seems anti-sottish( and I suppose it is, just that I've had to put up with the racist and sectarian views that come with being an Englishman in Scotland)

The Scots are a proud people, they put their football clubs before there hearts and the hearts before their brains, which may not be a bad thing but instead of chasing independence they should maybe chase a better government first. And as for the One-Eyed Scottish Idiot could he pls make sure that the door HITS him on the way out.
Cheers, Dodgedr007

My opinion is just that.

Gordon cannot help if he is short sighted but he keeps banging on about vision for which he has none in a vision for the future of a nation which he has lead down the path of ruin and decay and a lack of hope and VISION. God even tony did not do this visionary stuff at the moment it is the blind leading the blind!. Brail ballot papers only at the next election and the mantra see no evil hear no evil and by the way all the ballot papers will be in dutch as in double with this :mfo tongue twisting tyrant.

You're being too hard on the Sweaties. Only the English have racist views; the Celts (of all flavours) are just "strongly nationalistic", and allowances should always be made for this fact.

When I started this thread I was looking at the alternative to Labour. Up in Scotland there is an easy switch to SNP as both are socialist parties. The tories crumble in Scotland thanks to Thatcher :Very Happy The LibDems dont know what they want so they can hardly let us know. In England it is a lot harder to choose. You dont have an English National Party to take votes from Labour but worryingly there is the BNP who will.
My vision of an independant Scotland wouldnt be to rebuild Hadrians wall but to work together with the rest of the UK. When something goes tits up and I have to pay for the mess, I would rather it was because us Scots made it rather than some ar*e called Mandelson who probably doesnt even know where Scotland is. I just think that the people of the UK are p*ssed off with Chairman Broon and his lackeys for the mess they have made with the banks and for trying to destroy Royal Mail and when people are p*ssed off they will vote for another party. In Scotland the tories will be blamed just as much as Labour because Alex Salmond will paint that picture perfectly. So in essence you are left with the wishy washy Lib Dems or the SNP that will get the votes. The SNP will be left with a huge majority. England? You tell me guys!
The time has come to stop turning the other cheek, time to stop shaking our heads in bitter dismay, time to stop mumbling our angry words.
The time has come for union.

Over here in Northern Ireland we don't have any of the mainstream parties (the Conservatives do stand but lose their deposits everytime) so we have to vote for our own lot who for the most part do put the people first (the only exception seems to be Sammy Wilson  ).

I'm afraid to say i have to agree with those who say we cant go it alone, the Tories destroyed our heavy industry and manufacturing firms, and the woring mans best mate labour put what was left to the sword, i actually feel sorry for the English they have no one to vote for as a protest vote, hopefully the zanu labour types will suffer a slaughter up here and labour can go back to being a working class friendly party again :pray

we in scotland could'nt afford separation now,all the manufacturing jobs in scotland are being driven out because its easier to get cheap labour in eastern europe or the far east.
a couple of years ago banking was a big industry in edinburgh but the credit crunch has done for that.
anyway the working class should stick together irrespective especially in royal mail where our union is fighting what seems to be a losing battle to maintain the levels of rights we fought for years ago and are now being swiftly eroded.

The fact is that an independent country can set taxes just like Ireland in the past 20 years which does bring in outward investment, the main problem is that if the world economy goes tits up then your economy really suffers but then that's what the IMF and the World Bank is for :Very Happy bailing out countries that have bankrupted themselves :Very Happy .

The other alternative is to go to war with a much larger country, surrender immediately and get them to rebuild the country :Very Happy :Very Happy :Very Happy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mouse_That_Roared

In an Independent Scotland that won't be an issue, I would imagine if England was able to vote on it, Scotland could find Independence forced on it, Singapore had that unique distinction, it wasn't Independent by choice, it was expelled from the malaysian Union.

The United Kingdom of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland has worked so well for hundreds of years for one reason.
Together they are greater than the sum of their parts.
If they start splitting up, then they all will become weaker, less afficient and much less nicer places to live.

And dont forget that the the greatest superpower of the last century, and the only superpower of this century is USA/UK.

I expct some of you will laugh at that but it remains a fact. The USA and Gt Britain make up the dominant power of the world.

Of course, they are not equal partners. Only a fool would pretend that. Up until WW11 Britain was the senior partner and USA the junior. After WW11, USA became the senior partner.
Just spilt stain-remover down my shirt. Now how do I get that out?
