Royal Mail targets next generation of posties

Started at age 16 in 1999. Used to love the job. 6 day week but part time and my round was great. Got moved to full time a year later . Days when second delivery existed. Out in a van loading up boxes then starting walk. No PDAs to follow your every move .
I left last year after 23 years service. Couldn’t imagine starting in RM now. The workload is outrageous! So much more tasks to do on rounds also and park and loop the worst decision ever. Having to work with a partner who doesn’t have the same energy was brutal to say the least. Job ain’t attractive anymore and neither wonder folk are leaving in there droves. I thought it would be a job for life. Couldn’t be more wrong since privatisation and greedy higher management systematically destroyed it!
Far too much for the body to take !! Avoid like the plague if your young. Go to college learn a trade or whatever suits .

Should post this on all the social media outlets (for the young uns) best advice for not joining RM

This whole thread is the truth of Royal Mail now.

The business is absolutely f**ked beyond repair.

OPG's who actually used to care about the 'final mile' customers, hounded out of the job, sometimes losing their pension in the process.

Managers getting paid a ridiculous wage to bully people into working themselves into a mental health crisis.

Quality of service shat down the toilet.

Genuinely disgraceful behaviour, from one of the biggest employers in the UK.

It was one battle to far for the Union.

It broke many people including TP.
Loads of old school have left.
The rest of the legacy staff are now prodding there calculaters for the right time to leave.

I know it's completely immaterial now whether walks are achievable or not, but didn't it used to be the case that walks had to be achievable by the average OPG? In which case, by flooding offices with teens they could bring the average age down and put the average walking pace up.

Zarrena forget to mention that todays youth also face uncaring employers who expect them to devote their life to the company for minimum wage, poor pensions, limited sick pay.........

Future Delivered - ambitious new drive to help young people access the workplace

We have recently launched Future Delivered, the company’s most significant employability programme to help tackle youth unemployment across the UK. This programme will support young people with the skills they need to get a job as well as accessing entry level opportunities, helping us become an employer of choice for the next generation.

Through our unrivalled scale and reach across the UK, we aim to deliver economic and social benefits for our people, our customers, and the communities we serve.

As youth unemployment and socio-economic disparity continue to be significant challenges across the UK, Royal Mail has an opportunity to help young people access the workplace, develop their skills and build a career, driving social mobility.

Future Delivered will:

• Increase representation of employees under the age of 30 in frontline roles.

• Offer work experience placements in Royal Mail offices across the UK. The placements will help young people from all backgrounds and all corners of the country to build employability skills and help them get ready for the world of work.

• Provide a schools’ engagement programme giving students access to new opportunities.

• Transform the recruitment process by making it more relevant and accessible for young people from all backgrounds including utilising social media sites. The application process will also be simpler and mobile-friendly.

• Recruit early career talent. Over the last twelve months, Royal Mail has recruited over 200 postal and graduate apprentices and launched new Degree Apprenticeship programmes. This is creating new career routes for young people and providing investment to further their education whilst starting professional careers.

As part of the Future Delivered programme, Royal Mail is working with This is Purpose, who are experts at developing social mobility plans aimed at supporting people from lower socio-economic groups, inside and outside the business. We will be sharing more detailed plans early next year.
