Royal Mail investigation into woman's allegations
A postman dumped letters down a drain on a Halifax street, it is claimed.
A woman says she witnessed the mail being dumped in a street drain and has now put in a complaint to Royal Mail over the incident in Rye Lane, Halifax, this week.
Royal Mail has confirmed it has received the woman's complaint and is investigating.
The woman, who did not want to be named, posted a photo of the drain containing letters and told Yorkshire Live that her partner had managed to lift the drain cover and she had retrieved the letters. She then posted them.
"My partner had to lift the drain as it was so heavy for me, as we used my litter picker to grab them out."
She said "hospital letters", birthday cards and a small parcel were found in the drain.
A Royal Mail spokesperson said: "The security and integrity of the mail is paramount.
"We take allegations of this nature very seriously and are investigating the report we have received."
Earlier this month, Halifax MP Kate Dearden expressed concerns about "poor service" from Royal Mail in the town.
She said: "I know constituents across Halifax have been suffering poor service from Royal Mail in recent months. This has meant delays to receiving important post, and in some cases people have missed important hospital appointments or the opportunity to appeal parking and speeding fines because Royal Mail failed to deliver their post on time.
"This is simply not good enough. That’s why I have raised these failings directly with Royal Mail and demanded action. As the newly appointed Minister responsible for postal services, I will not shy away from holding Royal Mail to account for its failures. I will make sure the voices of Halifax residents are heard as we work to secure a better postal service for the whole of Britain.
"This is a priority shared by the Prime Minister too. In response to concerns raised by my colleagues at Prime Minister’s Questions this week, he made clear his expectations of Royal Mail and the action that needs to be taken to deliver a better service across the country.
"Everyone deserves to know that their post will arrive on time."
