Royal Mail Christmas delivery concerns raised by Greenock MSP

INVERCLYDE'S MSP has voiced concern about Royal Mail's ability to deliver its services in the area - and emphasised the importance of preparation for the busy Christmas season.

Nationalist Stuart McMillan says he is in ongoing dialogue with both the Greenock sorting office and senior Royal Mail representatives, but remains worried about service delivery in the area.

His comments come as the Scottish Government confirmed that both the Minister for Business and Fair Work and the Minister for Public Finance have written to Royal Mail.

At a recent session in Holyrood, the SNP politician asked the Scottish Government's Minister for Public Finance Hannah Mary Goodlad what dialogue she has had with the UK Government about Royal Mail's preparations for the festive season.

Hundreds of locals experienced problems with their post in the run-up to Christmas last year, with some going weeks without receiving any mail.

Royal Mail blamed last year's delays on an 'unexpected' increase in demand for its parcel service.

Speaking in parliament, Mr McMillan highlighted additional pressures on the service, particularly during the festive season.

He said: "The demand that is placed on Royal Mail to deliver packages on behalf of other delivery companies for the final mile, which consumers do not always see or know about, places a strain on Royal Mail services, especially in the lead-up to Christmas."

He asked whether the UK Government, which he said retains a 'golden share' in Royal Mail, should take action to increase the workforce ahead of the busiest time of the year.

Ms Goodlad acknowledged the concerns and said Minister for Business and Fair Work Tom Arthur had written to Royal Mail about the importance of fulfilling its obligations.

She added that she had also written to Royal Mail, but was yet to reply.

In response, Mr McMillan said: "Some might suggest that the reply to the minister has been lost in the post."

Of course they'll take people on for Christmas, they always do. It's just that they're either going to be sorting or delivering PACKETS. What can the government do? Insist agency clear the letters and nothing else? I'm right f***ing here. I turn up every day with the intention of delivering letters. I signed up twenty years ago to deliver letters. So did my colleagues who haven't left (yet), even the new ones who thought that was what the job was about but find themselves shocked by the real nature of the workload.

The duly designated USO provisor should not permitted to engage in distractions to fulfulling its legal obligations until such a time as those obligations are met. It's not delivery that needs reconfigured, it's RMG.

P.S. The unit deployed DM26 five weeks ago and I totally love it and I'm telling you of my own free will *click* that everything is going great so there's no need to worry about Christmas.
The machine stops.
