A postal firm that was part of an operation to cheat Royal Mail has been ordered to repay more than £1m.

Global Express Worldwide Ltd, based in Slough, Berkshire, was "one of the principal companies used to carry out the fraud", Southwark Crown Court previously heard.

It made more than £3m from criminal activity, Judge Philip Bartle KC determined.

The firm previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud, although its director Balginder Sandhu, 49, was found not guilty of the charge.

The wider fraud operation was led by Narinder Sandhu, 64, through his company Packpost International Ltd, the judge previously said.

From 2008 to 2017, falsely categorised mail was sent through firms in Berkshire and Buckinghamshire.

Prosecutors previously said Royal Mail had lost about £70m.

Global Express Worldwide was ordered to pay £1,071,878.48 within three months of the judge's order on 12 August.

For its part in the fraud conspiracy, it was fined £100.

Balginder Sandhu, its sole director since 2010, was given time to consider whether to apply for directions concerning the liability remaining on a mortgage for a flat in Thames Avenue, Windsor.

The judge ordered that no further action would be taken against Worldwide Transport Express Ltd, which also admitted conspiracy to defraud and was dissolved in 2025.

How could the company only be fined £100 for a multimillion pound fraud?

When in doubt, ask AI (""Global Express Worldwide"" | "why was the fine only £100 when the total taken was in the millions?")...

Answer:
In UK criminal law, a nominal court fine is often issued when a substantial confiscation order is already used to strip a criminal entity of its illegal profits.

Because Southwark Crown Court had already stripped Global Express Worldwide Ltd of its available assets, a massive financial fine would have served no practical purpose.

1. The Money is Recovered via Confiscation, Not Fines

The UK court system separates the process of taking back stolen money from the process of punishing a crime with a fine:
• The Confiscation Order: Judge Philip Bartle KC used the Proceeds of Crime Act to order Global Express Worldwide to pay £1,071,878.48 back to Royal Mail.
• The Nominal Fine: Because the court already ordered the firm to hand over more than £1 million, the £100 fine was simply a nominal figure required by law to formally mark the company's criminal conviction for conspiracy to commit fraud.

2. Punishing a Company vs. the Masterminds

Global Express Worldwide Ltd was a corporate vehicle used to carry out the crime, rather than the mastermind of the operation:

• The True Mastermind: The multi-million-pound fraud was orchestrated primarily by Narinder Sandhu through his main company, Packpost International Ltd. His personal assets—including a multi-million-pound Buckinghamshire mansion, a separate pool house, a Bentley, and a Rolls-Royce—were seized heavily by the state to account for the larger £70 million loss.
• Director Aquittal: The sole director of Global Express Worldwide, Balginder Sandhu, was found not guilty of the conspiracy. Because the individual director was cleared of personal criminal guilt, the court could only penalise the company entity itself based on its remaining reachable assets.

If you would like, I can provide more details on how the Proceeds of Crime Act works or break down the specific asset seizures taken from the fraud's mastermind, Narinder Sandhu.
