Royal Mail’s lack of concern

It was with interest that I read the recent front-page story about the Royal Mail. My recent experience is illuminating.

Last month, I was scammed. I stupidly allowed a liveried vehicle, a working website and a business address to overcome the dodgy roofer vibes of the bloke on the doorstep, and allowed allegedly "guaranteed" work to take place. I was already doubting my decision when the promised "guarantees" failed to arrive.

Among other efforts, I sent a letter by recorded delivery to the business address. Off it went from my local post office. Tracking revealed that it had not been delivered because "wrongly addressed", and was to be "returned to sender". I have no doubt that the address on the envelope, with postcode on the receipt from the Post Office, exactly matched that on the van and website. This and other evidence, such as Google street view, indicate that the business does not have an office at the purported address and is probably a criminal enterprise. I shall now be approaching trading standards, and the absence of a valid address may well be an issue.

Now, here's where Royal Mail comes in. The letter has not been returned to me, the sender. Following privatisation, the Post Office is separate from Royal Mail and can't help. On three occasions when I have called the Royal Mail number, after a rigmarole of entering numbers, I have been informed that they are experiencing an unusually high level of calls - a normal level presumably occurring at 5am on the third Wednesday of months with an R in the name - and have been told to expect a wait of 31, 27 and 63 minutes. Royal Mail's performance is abysmal. One might also wonder why, in a constitutional monarchy, the company is still permitted to use the adjective "royal" in its name, when it is owned by a group controlled by a Czech billionaire. The company seems to have a total lack of concern for its customers, and utterly unaccountable.
