Royal Mail has said there is ‘more to do to improve reliability’ of deliveries after Maidenhead’s MP raised concerns over late and missing deliveries in the town.
Josh Reynolds has launched a survey calling for residents to share their experiences of late and missing post and deliveries via Royal Mail.
The Lib Dem MP said a growing numbers of residents in Maidenhead have contacted him in recent weeks to report letters and parcels which have arrived days and weeks late.
He said many people relied upon the service to deliver important medical, legal and financial documents on time and called it as a ‘daily lifeline’, particularly for older people.
Mr Reynolds said he has repeatedly written to the Royal Mail, but has been told that the service is ‘not experiencing serious problems and that deliveries have never dropped below six days a week’.
The survey asks people to share their experiences to build a clearer picture of how widespread the issue is across the town and how many people it is affecting.
He said: “Recently, many residents have been in contact with me about the poor standard of Royal Mail deliveries across Maidenhead.
“I completely share these concerns and have first-hand experience of post arriving over two weeks late.
“Reliable postal services are essential for everything from medical appointments to legal documents, and the current situation falls far short of what people should expect.”
Royal Mail said the delivery office has recently had ‘a number of vacancies, which has meant some rounds have not always been completed as planned’.
Those vacancies ‘have now been filled’ and the new colleagues are ‘being trained and getting up to speed’.
A spokesperson said: “We aim to deliver to every address we have mail for, six days a week, although this does not mean every household will receive post every day.
“Currently, more than 92 per cent of letters arrive on time and over 99 per cent within a week, meaning longer delays are rare.
“We know there is more to do to improve reliability, which is why we are investing £500 million over five years and introducing a new delivery model across our delivery offices. These changes are designed to make services more consistent and improve performance for customers.”
