Royal Mail responds to letter concerns raised in Wrexham

ROYAL MAIL has responded to concerns that letters are taking longer than usual to arrive in the Wrexham area.

The Leader reported earlier this year on the story of one man who had only been receiving his post 'once or twice a week'.

That led to Frank Swinnerton, from Garden Village, having a near miss with a 'crucial' hospital appointment.

Last month, Wrexham Council Leader Mark Pritchard requested and secured the backing of the Executive Board to challenge Royal Mail about growing concerns that Wrexham’s postal service is failing to meet its statutory service levels – and he has pledged to 'go to the very top' of the organisation to get answers.

Many of our Wrexham-based readers have been contacting us to tell us about their experiences with Royal Mail deliveries.

The latest has raised concerns over letters 'arriving in bulk' after weeks of not receiving any.

They told us: "People in Wrexham and surrounding villages are not getting mail. Parcels ae getting delivered with no problems, but letters are arriving in bulk in one go, after a month in some cases of no deliveries."

We took this complaint to Royal Mail and, in their response, they told us that '99.4% of all letters arrive within a week, so delays of up to a month would be exceptionally rare'.

A spokesperson added: "We’re certainly delivering letters throughout Wrexham and the surrounding villages.

"An explanation is there are far fewer letters in the network than there were 20 years ago, with annual volumes falling from around 20 billion to around six billion.

"That means households will not necessarily receive letters as regularly as they used to, which can sometimes make it feel like there has been a gap in deliveries, particularly for people who remember receiving letters almost every day."

They added that anyone with concerns should contact them so that they can 'review the routes'.
