Tesco is introducing parcel lockers from multiple competing operators throughout its store estate, it has been reported. The supermarket chain is collaborating with Yeep, Evri and Royal Mail to install and manage parcel lockers outside its branches.
Yeep CEO Jamie Dickinson said: “As one of the UK’s most trusted retailers, Tesco shares our commitment to convenience, accessibility, and community presence, making this a significant milestone for Yeep.
“This partnership marks an important step in our mission to make parcel delivery and returns simpler, smarter, and more accessible. By placing lockers at Tesco locations, we are meeting customers where they already shop and providing secure, convenient parcel services that fit seamlessly into their daily routines,” he added, the Grocer reported.
It joins other stores in offering the service. Asda: Partners with Evri and people can collect and return parcels at Evri ParcelShops located inside most Asda superstores and Asda Express sites. Sainsbury’s features a mix of DPD, Evri, and Argos in-store collection counters depending on the location.
Morrisons partners with Quadient to host automated parcel lockers at Morrisons Daily stores, allowing for collections and returns from Royal Mail, DPD, UPS, and Evri. They also maintain Amazon counter collection points at many locations.
Co-op features in-store Amazon lockers, Yodel ParcelShops, and Quadient lockers at select convenience locations.
A trial at “selected Tesco stores” with Evri expands the company’s existing network of over 11,000 ParcelShops and lockers, which includes ParcelShop facilities at Post Office branches and Asda outlets. Evri had previously revealed a £50m investment to more than double this figure by 2030.
The Evri-branded lockers will be installed at a “small number” of Tesco Extra and Superstore sites. The trial enhances Evri’s current partnership with Tesco Clubcard, which allows customers to collect one Clubcard point for every £1 spent through Evri.com.
Tesco said: “We’re constantly looking for ways to make the shopping trip even more convenient for our customers, and as part of a small locker hub partner trial across a small number of stores, where we are bringing a number of providers together, we’re pleased to introduce Evri lockers across a selected small number of stores.”
In March, Royal Mail launched a six-month trial of its parcel lockers at nine Tesco stores. The lockers feature label printing, for customers without access to a printer. To use them, customers pay for postage online and get a QR code or request a QR code if they are returning a purchase.
“This partnership is another example of how we are making it easier than ever for our customers to collect, send and return parcels with us,” said Jack Clarkson, Royal Mail MD for out-of-home & commercial excellence.
“It’s great news for shoppers and a step towards delivering our ambition to triple our parcel points to 45,000 by 2030,” Clarkson added.
Parcel lockers are fast becoming a common sight at supermarkets across the UK. Earlier this year, Aldi introduced InPost parcel lockers to 50 more stores, bringing the total to over 600, in a rollout that began in 2023, meaning the lockers are now available at more than half of Aldi’s UK estate of around 1,080 stores.
In December, Morrisons announced plans to expand its network of fully automated Amazon parcel return lockers to 350 stores, enabling shoppers to drop off any Amazon parcels they wish to return.
Last year, both Sainsbury’s and Co-op struck partnerships with Royal Mail to roll out the delivery firm’s lockers across several of their stores.
