A business that was served a legal notice over its car park has submitted a planning application including staff parking on site.
West Suffolk Council has received a planning application from Royal Mail in relation to its delivery office, in Skyliner Way on the Moreton Hall estate, in Bury St Edmunds.
This comes after a breach of condition notice was served on Royal Mail giving it five weeks to stop parking fleet and commercial vehicles in an area designated under a planning condition for use as private car parking. The notice, which was served on October 22, expired last week.
The enforcement action has followed many months of parking problems ‘negatively impacting’ the estate community after Royal Mail banned workers from leaving their own vehicles in the on-site car park towards the end of last year.
Residents have spoken of their fears that someone was ‘going to get hurt’ on the roads after the move by Royal Mail led to staff parking their personal vehicles in nearby streets.
Cllr Frank Stennett, cabinet member for planning at West Suffolk Council, said: “We have received a planning application from Royal Mail which includes staff parking on site, and this will become public in due course.
“We are therefore not able to make further comment at this time in case we prejudice the ongoing enforcement action or the determination of their planning application.”
Any failure by Royal Mail to comply with the breach of condition notice is a criminal offence which could result in court proceedings and a fine for the business.
