can any pension experts shed some light on this. a mate at our office is being ill health retired in a few weeks. he has been told over the phone that he can have IHR payment (roughly 45 weeks pay) 'OR' pension. but NOT both. its royal mail policy he was told. he asked for clarification no less than 3 times. and it was verified 3 times. ... if you take ill health HOW can they stop you taking your pension, its YOUR money. they will be breaking the law if they withheld your pension money. he is 61. the rep says he's never heard of anything so stupid and is in the process off getting info from the branch. I said I would also post on here to see if anybody knew.

There are two types of IHR.

If he’s being given ‘IHR with lump sum’ his pension will be deferred and as he’s over 55, can take it whenever he wants to. In fact as he’s 61 he really should have already taken the NRA60 part.

If he’s getting ‘IHR with immediate payment of pension’ then he will be given his pension regardless of age.

The info in the link provided gives all the info.

All the info is in the link provided by rehabron, but basically you must be incapable of doing your job or any other job for RM.
Payment would be 34 weeks wages plus either 9 or 12 weeks PILON depending on service.

Well there's a surprise!
Royal Mail managers.....about as popular as a t.urd in a swimming pool!
The DDA/Equality Act demands action,NOT words......adjustments NOT Occupational Health referrals.Case No:2505901/09
Royal Mail is an Equal Opportunities Employer..It discriminates against everybody.

My understanding from reading the CWU agreement section 12.8.4 (Google 'IHR Royal Mail' and it is a pdf file) that the PILON should be extended to also include outstanding qualifying Holiday Pay and extra duty payments which form part of regular leave payment (drivers alowance 7.5 T etc).
I am currently going through IHR with lump sum and have asked my Line Manager to get this sorted as HR have told him they didn't know about the Union Agreement - yeah, and pigs might ........
