hgv courses with cwu

Hi i have been with the union since i joined rm and would like to put my name down for the hgv courses the cwu do for half the price. could any one give me further details on this as i am finding it hard to seek the right info on it.

I have Just phoned them and my branch say they have never heard of anything like this.

they do it at chester cwu learning

I have just spoken to Chester and they say this HGV training information is correct.

I then phoned my branch again and they said they have never heard of a scheme involving HGV training.

Thank God I don't have to rely on my branch for information.

Large Goods Vehicle Category C (LGV 2)
(Rigid Vehicles)

Anyone wishing to drive goods vehicles over 3500kgs GVW. This licence will enable successful candidates to drive any rigid vehicle. To qualify for this you must hold a full car licence and be medically fit and because of new legislation you can now learn to drive this vehicle from 18 years old.

Large Goods Vehicle Category C+E (LGV 1)
(Articulated or Drawbar Vehicles)

Anyone wishing to drive goods vehicles over 3500kgs GVW with a trailer over 750kgs GVW. Since January 1997 drivers are now required to pass Category C prior to taking a C+E course and test. This licence will enable successful candidates to drive any articulated or drawbar vehicle. To qualify for this you must hold a full category C licence and be medically fit and because of new legislation you can now learn to drive this vehicle from 18 years old.

Usually about £1200 each
Now only £400 each plus Medical Costs

All training is conducted by qualified instructors with numerous years of experience within the industry; they will help you all the way through the process to enable you to achieve your goal and gain your licence. Generally courses run for five days with a test on the fifth day

I think it was mentioned a while back that it will eventually get rolled out nationally. I hope so because I'd go for it.

I would save your money,before I came to RM I was a hgv1 driver for 14 years,big double sleeper Daf truck 3 or 4 nights out a week,sounds great but not in reality,impossible deadlines to meet,racing against traffic,falling out with the wife and kids because you are so tired after a weeks driving,trying to find somewhere safe at night to park up,getting pestered by pikeys to sell them some diesel,waking up in the morning nowhere to have a wash,finding out the pikeys have visited you in the night and drilled your fuel tank,cut your curtains and rifled your load,then you've got the police and their spotchecks,motorways being closed because some dickheads suitcase has come off his roofrack and there clothes have caused an accident,finally getting to a big supermarket distribution centre and waiting 5 hours to get unloaded and explaining to your wife that you cannot take her out for that meal you promised because you ran out of hours and are forced to park in a laybye that hundreds of motorists have used as a toilet,then trying to get to sleep in a cab in these temperatures,honestly don't bother its a terrible job.

Fair play to him.I used to really enjoy it but not now its a nightmare.
