The "Christmas Bonus" is actually an attendance allowance paid to cover the pressure period over Christmas and New Year and is designed to encourage staff not to be absent when they are needed most. It is reduced proportionately to the amount of time (normal days off not included) that you are absent for during the period it covers.

I'd probably have a long look at myself and ask myself why my staff would do such a thing.

To me its boll*cks, A Christmas bounus should be a thankyou for all the hard work which has been done throughout the year, everyones knows the extra money which is spent this time of the year, so it would not hurt to get it what ever happens . Prehaps a bottle of wine and a tin of roses as a local thankyou would also be nice.

None at all but why is it right for one business to do it based on need to make a profit, and one to hold back some or all of it because their employees exercised their democratic and legal right.

Actually I agree with RM withdrawing part of the bonus as its outlined in the literature they send to us and forms part of out T&Cs so if you go on strike, officially on unofficially you have to take that into account.

What is wrong is paying bonuses to "high fliers" and managers when they have not yet paid back all of the loan to the government - that should be their first priority not bonuses. Unfortunately it was in their contracts so they are legally, but not morally, entitled to it. What we need is a culture change in the UK from "Profit is King" to "Service is sacred"

However to inform everyone here is last years Christmas bonus brief I am fairly sure the new one wont change much.

I just don't see any similarity between us and the banks, it's a ludicrous argument. You might just as well argue that even though we've been out on strike 18 times (in London), we should still get a bonus because Premiership footballers still get paid even when they've got themselves sent-off and thus made themselves ineligible for work

Front-line bank (counter) staff have not been on strike as far as I know. If they do actually get any sort of bonus, good luck to them, their basic pay is pretty crap and they deserve the extra for putting up with some of the arrogant customers I've had the misfortune to queue behind in the past.

I put it to you mailman337, that if you were running a company, you would not pay a bonus to your own staff if they had been engaged in activity that damaged the profitability and long-term interests of that business.

If you still say you would pay a bonus, can you please let me know when you are about to set-up a new business, so I can get a job with you and then fail to show up for nearly 4 weeks, and still expect to get a Xmas bonus ??
